Hi everybody! I just thought I'd throw this out there, and see if anybody may have an inkling as to what this mystery piece is. I recently picked up a great little BSA Martini Cadet rifle that has been re-chambered for 32-20 WCF. Included with the rifle was a BSA #30 receiver sight, which I may or may not install on the rifle. Involves drilling & tapping two screw holes, and I'm not sure if I want to modify the rifle.(Any opinions on that while we're at it?). Anyway, in the baggie taped to the rifle along with the sight was the piece that has me confused. Looks like it fits in a dovetail, with a knurled knob screw to tension it in the dovetail. In the "hook" recess there is a tension spring. Could this be part of an incomplete flip-up sight of some kind? It's driving me NUTS! Aside from all the above, I'm looking forward to load development with this old girl. The bore is primo!

A friend bought one of these that had also been converted to .32-20. I don't know if he's ever fired it, but he asked me more than thirty years ago to try it because he knew I loaded .32-20. I only fired a few rounds and not at any great distance, but seems like it was reasonably accurate.

Its a sling hook ,have one in the odds and ends box, fits into a rail of a small bore rifle.

Mal in AU nailed it! Thank you sir! And after seeing your post it seems obvious now. Have seen sling hooks very similar on smallbore match rifles - snap the cuff sling in, and easily detach it between relays. The hook slides in the rail, and the knurled knob locks it in desired position.. On a closing note, does anyone have an opinion as to whether or not it would be adviseable to have the rear of the receiver drilled & tapped to mount the BSA #30 sight that came with tge rifle? I'm not in the know about collector value on these BSA Cadet (this is an Australian Commonwealth rifle, with the Kangaroo stamp) rifles. And maybe the collector value is done for due to the 32-20 rechamber anyway? If it's just a "shooter" I'll probably install the sight. I love receiver sights. Thanks again to all!

They are only valuable in nice original condition or for their action. The action is worth more than an original rifle. The sight is worth a couple of hundred bucks. FWIW

Mount the sight. Those P-H target sights are the cat's pajamas on Martini Cadets.
