Good Day,
I enquired about possibly shooting cast bullets through my 300 PRC a while ago. Since then, I have done some serious load development and found what appears to be a good load. I use the NOE-314-198-SP cast bullet, sized to .309 calibre and gas-checked. I use Linotype alloy with a BHN of 22. My propellant weight is 63.5 grains of Somchem S361 [DISCLAIMER: Reloading with or based on this information is done entirely at one's own risk]. This powder is locally manufactured in South Africa and is roughly the equivalent of H4831. I used Hornady's Handbook of Cartridge Reloading data for the 300 PRC and the 200-grain bullet. I reduced the recommended load in the handbook for the 200-grain bullet by 10% as a starting load and worked my loads up by 0.1-grain increments.
In this video, I show how I determine the reticle offset of the NOE bullet at 200, 300, and 400 metres or 218, 328, and 437 yards. The load appears to work well out to 400 metres. The velocity is in the region of 2 500 feet per second.
I'm sure there is room for improvement, and I'd appreciate any comments or advice you could provide.
Have a Great Day,
Richard
