I've been casting for years and never had happen what happened this morning. I just got through casting and went to add a WW ingot to the pot as usual and POP. Lead everywhere. I admit I'm not exactly what you'd call OSHA certified but this was totally unexpected and snapped my pucker string shut. From now on the ingots will sit on the edge of the pot for awhile before dumping them in. Be safe out there because "stuff" (for the the easily offended) happens.

I've had it happen several times. But it's always when the pot is warming up. Happened twice and I learned to put a pie to n on it and walk away. Mom always said " She didn't raise a total fool, just a halfwit"

Maybe a vug, air bubble in the ingot? Like you said doodoo occurs. Best to take precautions. I wear a good full face mask and gloves. Better safe than sorry.

surface moisture ????
Who knows. The WWs are kept in the garage and I've been using the batch for some time. It was a little exciting but I didn't get burned and it cleaned up pretty easily so a not too dramatic lesson.

Pucker string, doodoo ?
Unless you have a background in the study of human anatomy some of these medical terms won't be easily understood.

My friend Ruben once poured a bunch of lead into his pot. He had a master caster machine. The fellow who had given him the wheel weights said that they had all been inspected, but as they went into the molten lead, not only were there live primers, but live ammo in that can. There was lead all over his shop, and how he got away without severe burns can only be credited to his quick feet.

Saw a report of an A-10 pilot over Iraq. He said his fangs were out so far they were scraping the paint off the cockpit floor, that is until he was hit with a surface to air missile. He stated they still haven’t found his seat cushion
