I picked up one of those big 30 caliber bullet molds from Ken Campbell last week. When I got the mold the base of the rear cavity wouldn't fill out so I broke the edge of the offending cavity's top edge with a little file work for some venting and it fixed it right up. I don't know who thought a boat tail on a cast bullet would be a good idea but you never know. I'm a little suspect of a 10 twist stabilizing this thing at the velocities the powder coat and my shoulder will tolerate in an 8 1/2 pound rifle but then again you never know. I shot a longer and heavier bullet out of a 30ppc case using a 10 twist at 1700 fps in a match or two but that was in a 14 pound rifle. I'm going to take a few to Windhill next Sat. and will give them a go after the match. Here's the bullet next to the 175 gr. NOE I've been using.

I think I remember reading that this boat tail will hold a gas check. The ‘03 Springfield shot a 230 round nose from a 10” rifling. If you get that thing stable at 1200 fps or so it might be a lot of fun.

You can also load it backwards with no GC for subsonic loads. It is dual purpose.

I'm not interested in using a check on it. I got it just to have something new and unusual to play with. If I can get it to shoot as is all is well. If not I'll move the mold along.

It'd really be a boat tail then! Loading that thing backwards in a case is too weird even for me and I don't know how seating it backwards would help with stability anyway.

Years past, people would load 30 cal 150 gr FMJs backwards to use for hunting as a HP bullet

In my XP-100’s 30 PPC, the bullet was an LBT weighing 170-185-grains @1950-2100 fps. That was a handful! It weighed 7-pounds (per CBA rules.) Bullets were 50/50 Lino/Mono, very hard!

IWent to a Windhill match today. The weather was a little rough with 25 mph winds and a temp of 94 degrees. I didn't do too hot in the actual match but when I was done I had the chance to shoot a few of the 230 grain Lee's. I'm not too disappointed considering I didn't pay too much attention to the flags because I just wanted to be done. There is slight tipping but a lot less than I was expecting and maybe a bit more velocity would take care of it. I dropped the charge a half grain from what I was using with my 175 grain bullet and velocity was in the 1400 fps range. Overall I had a great time at the match and more so seeing and being with a group of guys whose company I really enjoy. If anyone has a chance to attend a local match (local is a relative term since it's 190 miles one way for me) do it. It's a lot of fun and no matter how good or bad you do you'll enjoy yourself and make some new friends.

My large bullet molds are single cavity, iron/steel. One is a Paul Jones and the other a Saeco.
My best .30 caliber mold is an aluminum LBT 2-cavity. Not far behind is a Don Eagan single cavity brass mold.
My .22 mold is a brass NOE 4-cavity. My .38-55 4-cavity brass mold is by Accurate.
All mold alloys have served me well, no stand out preferences.

Yes it's an 06. If you ever decide on a little road trip to Windhill let me know and if there's not a rendezvous or anything else going that weekend I'd meet you there so you didn't feel out of place. They're a great bunch of guys anyway and you'd feel welcome if I was there or not.

Max I remember you asking if anyone had some of these laying around to try out a month or so ago. If you're still interested when the weather breaks I'll send 50 or so your way to try out for the cost of a small flat rate box. What I did with it was double powder coat it give some nose diameter, tapered it in a 1 1/2 degrees taper die a bit, sized it to .3095, and loaded it with 15.5 grains of #9 using WW. I'll send them ready to shoot. Let me know if you're still interested and we'll talk closer to when it gets below 95 degrees, way below.

I like the range and running into Dan and Stan, as well as a few others. The driving distance for me is 363-miles. I often thought you’d have a longer drive but I guess not.

Tom I remember you being there at least once. Funny I can't remember what I did 10 minutes ago but can remember what happened 20 years ago. I wasn't there in years but last year decided to make a match. My back isn't what it used to be so 3 hours behind the wheel isn't as appealing as it used to be. This past weekend was a 5 shot group match so I decided now was the time since that's my favorite. Those years you're talking about were a great time to be a CBA match shooter. Ed Doonan passing on was a great loss to the CBA and his friends but the ones I used to shoot with out there are still jewels. The most surprising thing to me is Dan Hudson hasn't aged one bit since I saw him 20 or 25 years ago. It's kinda spooky. The rest of the guys seem to be holding their own too. I came up to Minn. a time or two when the old crew were still around and had a great time. Glad to see your Oakdale matches are still hanging around.

for any of you that were that day there I remember a very sad event whereupon a beautiful German Shephard was run over in the parking lot and expired ... but nevertheless ...
a fine time was had by one and all ... one of the little sparkles already in my bucket ...

I remember that sad day Ken. That was Steve Johansens new puppy. It was totally accidental but horrible none the less. I bet the guy that ran him over was haunted by the experience. On a happier note Ed was a great human being and the matches were always a fantastic time. I'm sure you don't remember me but if you remember a guy swearing every time he pulled the trigger that was me. I wish I remembered you so I could put a face to your name but that's asking way too much from my fading memory.

Back in the AOL / Compuserve bullet board days Dan Hackett and I went at it over cast bullet accuracy. I hope he was better in person than his attitude on the bulletin boards.Glad to see he made it to a CBA match.If he was wearing a 219 Wasp or 220 Wilson Arrow shirt from a cut from the book "22 caliber varmint rifles" It was one I sent him I had made up.

This has nothing to do with anything but just wanting to see how it would post in a thread. Anyway this is the match results from last Saturday. As mentioned before the forcast called for 94 degrees with 20 - 30 mph winds and I dont think they were far off. A 22 match was planned for after the BR match but it didn't take much convincing to call that off. To be honest I was surprised 7 people even showed up. I had a bit of a struggle with the wind but with determination and perseverance I was able to hang on and win HNT class. Of course I was the only one shooting HNT class but hey a wins a win.

Odd coincidence. I was out in the garage digging through my lead supply and here are two frying pan size discs of lead. Each with lettering on them. Engraved is “Marston Cast Bullet Society” and a series of round concentric rings representing a CBA target. Someone printed my name, Region 4 Match Champion 24/26 June 2006 on one. The says LRH Match Champion..I was alone in that LRH category. But as Pat said….a win is a win! It helped that I set (6) new NR’s @ that match and was given a bunch of screamer stickers. The scorer? Ageless Dan Hudson.
I was told that these discs were often given out @ Windhill matches.
