Hi, does anyone have experience of using Maxam CSB5 asa reduced load for cast bullets in .303 Lee Enfields? I understand its is very similar to Red Dot, with much more availability here.
Im using 165gr gas checked bullets, and looking to shoot targets out to 100-200yds

If you look at the Maxam shotshell oading data you may be able to determine the closeness of burn rate compared to Red Dot by comparing it to Alliant data for RD.Remember that Maxam will be data for straight wall hulls (Cheddite most likely) so you should look for similar hulls with Alliant.
Interestingly Eley Hawk actually list the powder per shotshell load but not the charge that I can find. They use Maxam.

I have no experience with Maxam powders, as they are not available in Norway. From what I’ve found on the net, it is a single-base disc powder with a listed burning rate similar to (current) red dot, american select, 700x.
I would expect this powder to work very well with reduced loads. But I would stay in the 7-9grs interval with this powder. I would not suggest reproducing «the load» with 13grs (as you might have read about, using red dot).
As I said, no experience; but this how I would approach such a powder.

That's an interesting chart and I don't think I have ever seen it before. My Quick Load indicates that Maxam CSB5 is slightly faster than Red Dot and interestingly it also shows CSB4 as being slightly faster than Green Dot as well. Somewhat different than the charted positions. That's my two cents, good luck, Squid Boy

I used the 11gr load this morning and it shot very pleasantly but not very accurately. 4 in group at 100 yds.
Ill try and improve the groups with some fine load adjustments.
