I just bought 100 unfired Star Line 38 S&W cartridge cases for a 38 Safety Hammerless I recently aquired. I was sizing the cases for the first time this morning. I had sized several, then the next one I put in the press went right in with no resistance whatsoever! I examined it and discovered it had a Hornady 38 Special headstamp! It is trimmed to the same length as the 38 S&W, but obviously is 38 Special diameter. Anyone had something like this happen before?

Not with Starline, but once had a 38 Auto +P case in a bag of new Winchester cases for 38 S&W.

Did you purchase these somewhere else other than Starline? As you may know, the 38 Spl can be used as a parent case for a host of other 38 cases. I trimmed them for 38 Short Colt a while back before Starline got them to market. Looks to me like some trimmed 38 Special cases made their way into the bag-o-brass.

With rifle in hand, I confidently go forth into the darkness.

I got the cases from Midway. They don't currently list any thing that looks like trimmed Hornady brass. Who knows? On the plus side, it was easy to catch. On the negative side I only have 99 cases of 38 S&W. That will still be plenty for a 5 round revolver though!

Probably a return item.they didn't advertise as such.

Starline make cases for just about all domestic makers in the oddball chambers. Heck even standard ones too. They did a big run for Norma in 38 spec with Norma head stamp.
