It hasn’t been mentioned recently but several years ago political discussions on our forum repeatedly descended into name calling and character assassination.  As a result, the CBA Board of Directors voted overwhelmingly to ban the topics of politics and religion on this forum.

Simple notices of political news to warn member of potential laws or regulation of interest to shooters are allowed.

Based on this policy, I recently deleted a thread on a political issue which quoted the belief of a prominent political partisan.

We all have our political and religious beliefs, or maybe none at all, but there are plenty of internet sites where these kinds of discussions are welcome.

Thank you John.

I wouldn't like this site to turn into like some of the others.

Like at a family reunion no politics or religion allowed at the table, or Granma is going to be seeing you.

It's was explained to me as two gangs fighting for money and power. Why would somebody spend millions to get elected for a job that pays $60,000.00 per year. Corruption is a slippery slop.

Sorry, I thought basic economic education would not be taken as political.

Will not do that again.

Considering that this place is for firearm specific discussion, and since one slate of candidates expressly wants to banish and forbid all things firearm related, it seems to me that discussion of current presidential positions is the number one topic at this point in time.

So, in support of shooting sports I suggest that voting democrat this November is a vote to ban firearms.  Since this is not a political post, but a firearm related post, it should not be censored.  cool

Lee,

The Board did not vote to allow political discussions any time  politics might affect gun owners but only simple notices that something new was coming. in other words short news items not opinion pieces such as your opinion above stated as a fact.

if they had OKed ANY political discussion that might affect gun owners, we would have had full fledged political discussion which turns to name calling. We had recently run that experiment when the Board voted.

At the time, most of the users who expressed an opinion were in favor of keeping political arguments out of the forum. I don't know for sure. but I would bet that most of our current users would probably just as soon not have this forum clogged up with politics.

=======

Ric,

My action was based on the opening post which was a political statement from a person who has pledged tens of millions of dollars to one candidate. That seemed pretty political to me.

Anybody who might think that the quote was a fact straight from God via Musk, instead of an opinion should ask themselves if they think the opposing party would agree.

Agree with Lee's perspective.

I can recall one post that was deleted that was critical of Wayne L. of the NRA. I didn't see that as political but others did.

Tom,

I am not sure about individual posts but the thread giving the news that the court was forcing Wayne to pay back about $5.5M he had stolen from the NRA was not deleted and is in the archives.

It was awhile back, before the NY stuff. Had to do with Wayne's wild spending behavior. But not worth looking for. To me it wasn't pure politics but directly related to gun owmers and the probably most supported pro-gun organization among us, despite its flaws.

Politics related to gun interests should be allowed in my opinion. I do think it should be limited to one thread and not work it way into other threads. Politics are as much a part of todays firearm scene as the prices of powder and primers, You don't have to read it.

I am here for cast bullet information and process - not politics, religion, cooking recipes, or knitting patterns. I have had enough of politics and political "discussions" by anyone. There are forums where politics can be addressed and discussed until it devolves into keyboard murder scenes. It's disgusting and completely off topic on this forum.

I agree completely with the Board of Directors decision to keep politics, religion, and other completely unrelated topics off this forum. If you wish to scream at other users about politics, go to the Cast Boolits forum and screech your head off to other users screeching back at you.

I am sick to death of "politics" in its present state. Were political screeching allowed here, I would simply leave this forum too and not continue my membership in the CBA.

This forum is my escape from the current madness surrounding us all. Internet forums are besieged with political discourse and I applaud the BoD for preventing it here.

If it were in just one thread, then how is it offensive to you. You don't have to participate in or read the thread. I think the original intent to prevent the inappropriate talk was to not have it enter into various threads and get off topic. One thread where people could vent sounds reasonable.

It sounds as if the board now wants to prevent us from sharing our views with other like minded people.

While I am keenly interested in membership opinion regarding bullet casting and all matters associated with bullet casting, I do not want to hear opinion on sexual orientation, preferred pronouns, polygamy, which God is the "true" God, which BBQ style is the best, or any other matters irrelevant to bullet casting. If one wishes to join the chattering masses discussing all things politic, there are forums for that; namely X, or Facebook, or the Cast Boolit forum. There are also other "shooting" forums out there where you can opine till the moon falls out of the sky about politics. Please......go there and join the cacophony. Someone there would love to engage you in pointless argument.

The BoD is simply responding to the membership calls for the squelching of off topic subject matter like politics, religion, sexual preferences, and others. We are not privy to the PMs sent to the Board or the Admins of this forum to that effect.

So David, your observation that "It sounds as if the board now wants to prevent us from sharing our views with other like minded people." is an astute observation except that the BoD is responding to MEMBERSHIP calls for such and your assumption that we are "like minded" is fatally flawed.

I value your opinion on all things bullet casting based on your decades of experience. I couldn't give a holy cr*# about your opinion of matters politic because your opinion is one of billions, and, will have no effect on the future political landscape.

So...please contribute to the forum as in the past with bullet casting matters. But remember that I and others don't want to hear your opinion on other matters irrelevant to the main subject on this venue.

Hopefully the Admin will just delete this entire thread and we can all get back to pouring the silver stream rather than be distracted by political savants.

Great points on both sides of the debate. I used to be on the side of having a header allowing political/anything goes area but in hindsight leaving things as they are might be best. BUT I'm also against heavy handed moderation where one or two people have control of what's considered off limits posts/topics. If it's a gun control issue it should be allowed if it doesnt get out of hand. If it's a rant for the sake of ranting probably not. Religion should be off the table completely. The whole censorship issue is a sticky subject so it's probably best to leave things as they are with more thought on what the readers might consider over the top by the powers that be. I whole heartedly agree with the point made that if you find something offensive just move on to a different subject. Doesn't seem too complicated to me. I also believe that if more people spent the few minutes starting new shooting related threads this would be a non issue.

I was on the board, the admin for this form and my phone number plastered all over the forum and nearly every piece of literature put out by the CBA. So I can tell you from experience that complaints to the admin or the board about political posts related to firearm related issues were and probably still are nil and none. Besides no one here is promoting posts about religion or sexual matters.

You are trying to mix oranges and apples. And again as I and others on this thread have stated, we only want to talk about politics related to firearm issues.

I think there is a much better place to deal with all kinds of political issues. It's called the voting booth. We had all better find and use one in the near future.

It is nearly impossible for me to explain why I am in favor of narrowly focused political discussion on this forum without being political. I am currently on the BoD, if there was a vote it was before my time. Not trying to be argumentative, just no way that I can think of to confirm the vote, who voted and when. We need to rely on John's memory of such, it's good enough for me. Times are changing. I have also been an Admin of another forum since 2006. I have deleted a bunch of posts and threads in that time. I get the rule and the reasons behind it in a general way.

I don't know if this will help but I will give it a try.

On January 4, 2013 I posted to the Forum the new rules for the forum relative to banning political and religious  topics.  I don't have the vote count but my post said; "approved overwhelming by the Board by email vote."

If anybody thinks the ban is a left vs. right issue, I can assure you the 2013 Board had a noticeable lack of "Snowflakes".

The ban was well before either David or Mark joined the board. By the time David joined the board we had been enforcing the ban for three years and it had become a dead issue.

On the back of every Fouling Shot it says that one of the CBA's four purposes is to "Conduct the Association's affairs in a manner which presents a favorable impression of the private ownership of firearms to the general public and to otherwise support the citizen's right to bear arms."

I can assure you that the forum"s political discussions that led to the board taking action would not have presented a favorable impression of gun owners to any sane person.  Just one example --- We had sample "letters to your congressman" posted for others to use as a template where the two main points were; we are against background checks and we all have guns and know how to use them.

I think it is fair to say that both the intensity and ugliness of political discussions have increased since 2013.  I think we have little evidence to support the hope that that future political discussion wouldn't return to thee same stupid zoo.

John
