That's great!

I made the mistake of requesting a blood lead test through my HMO here in California.  Big mistake. It triggered a letter from CalOSHA to my employer asking them what I was working on to expose me to lead and what they were going to do to mitigate the situation.  It's funny because I have been retired for several years.  My old boss still has my phone number.  He called and we had a laugh.

Apparently an investigator tried to talk me but we never connected.

In the future I will pay for a private, anonymous blood test.

What several folks have told me over the years, is the following…

The largest hazard for the bullet caster is not the smoke rising from the pot, especially right after fluxing. What is hazardous is the air born microscopic lead particulate that results from striking the sprue plate, severing the sprue material from the bullet(s) during the act of opening the mold. The person inhales the microscopic lead particles. These particles accumulate in our body.

Many casters utilize a fan blowing air from behind the caster, having the air flow go beyond the caster, over the pot and on out a nearby door or window.

An alternate approach is to provide some kind of vacuum source that pulls ambient air away from the caster and the pot area and discharging that collected contaminated air out of the area.

But of course there will be other possibly conflicting theories.

Here's my set-up.  My blood levels are similar to yours.  In fact, my doctor stopped testing.  They send the results to the Department of Health or something but I've never been aware of any follow-up.  I've always told my doctor I work with pottery.wink

I don't tumble brass.  Tumblers produce dust.  My brass gets washed with citric acid, salt, and Dawn.  So what if it's tarnished?

Had mine checked twice.  It was high, but...  Doc told me levels were for developing kids, not adults.  I didn't worry too much.  Then, realized where mine was probably REALLY coming from.  Old 24% Lead decantur I keep my bourbon in!  Told the Doc my suspicions and we both had a good laugh as he told me no one has ever died from drinking bourbon out of a lead decantur!

My previous employer had my blood lead tested at least once a year for the past 13 years. The company standard was half of the OSHA standard. I never tested high. Co-workers that did usually traced it back to poor hygiene. The primary workplace lead source was primers.

In casting, airflow relative to the source is important. Max503, your setup is excellent, the fan drawing air from behind you, over the lead pot and out the window.

Washing with cold water and soap after exposure is a very effective way to minimize what we absorb.

When i worked at Deka battery. They checked our lead periodically. And i didn't work with the lead there. I was on the acid fill line.

The biggest issue with those who have higher lead levels is either eating while casting or loading cast bullets, or not washing your hands after handling lead. More lead is ingested from bad habits than by casting lead bullets.

That was my issue at 1st. Now i don't have snacks and drinks im the loading room. And i clean my hands often with wipes.

Boy, that sure sounds like a HIPAA violation to me, the way the state of California acted upon your curiosity of blood work.
