HELP ME IDENTIFY THE MAKER OF THIS MOULD

As I stated earlier in a post, I borrowed a bullet mold from the man, from which I purchased the 86 Winchester rifle. This mold is a new one on me but of course my knowledge of mold manufacturers is limited.

The mold is marked as LBT and is made from brass and RCBS handles will fit, and it is a 240gr-gc-.339. The sprue plate is of the stamped variety with very deep impressions above the two cavities and these two cavities connect. The LBT letters are stamped inside a stamped bullet form. All information will be appreciated.

LBT is Lead Bullet Technologies Owned by Veral Smith. They recently had a fire and lost everything. They made good molds. Moyie Springs, Idaho.

I don't know if you used the mold yet but the way to fill the cavities is to pour the lead in the plate at the back end and let it fill and run off the plate at the front and back into the pot. Some people seem to have problems with the plate design. Maybe they're trying to fill it by tipping the mold like you would on a conventional plate or just pouring enough lead to fill it. Pour it in the back and let it run off the front and it'll cast great. Veral made top of the line molds. Veral also suggested a pinch of mold lube on the alignment pins, the sprue plate where it slides under the hold down finger, and the plate screw. This was for aluminum molds and don't know if it pertains to the brass ones. If so a little goes a long way in keeping it out of the cavities.

mr mashburn ..   mr. Smith at LBT is one of the interesting stories in cast bullet shooting.  his lube is still possibly the most used winning lube today...     LBT Blue ..

and his ideas on cast accuracy might be as good as any or even totally correct ...  he thought groove diameter bullets with long groove diameter throats the best approach ...  ..   interestingly, the killer 22lr match chambers and bullets follow his ideas ... but most winning factory chambers favor nose riders with a groove dia rear portion ...   be interesting to build a match chamber with his ideas ...  i always thought he might be right .. 

pretty sure he is 95 per cent correct on hunting bullet performance ..

i have his original " book"    Jacketed Performance with Cast Bullets   from about 1990 or so and would be glad to send it down to you for your enjoyment ...   pm me with your latest address ...

I have never used a brass mold during all of my casting career. I would like to ask; what is the proper way to care for a brass mold and are there any certain ways to prep the mold before a casting session?

Hi David: I have found that a brass mold takes a little longer to start casting good bullets than an aluminum or cast steel mold. I put mine on a hot plate when I start my lead pot. I put the mold sprue plate down on the hot plate. I also work it a little faster than my aluminum mold. Once it gets up to temp the mold pours very consistent pills. If it is a new mold I condition it in my powder coating oven until the brass takes on a darker hue. Usually 2 or 3 sessions at 450 degrees for 45 minutes does it. take care, mike
