Hello and thanks for looking. I stripped the threads for the cone (nipple) of my 2-band yesterday. I looked on line and saw mixed opinions on whether it is advisable to use a helicoil to repair it. Have any of you used this method? I know that they held up when I roger’d the spark plug threads on my BSA.

helicoil never worked for me

I paid the rent fixing Honda 350, with Keenserts

you may not have enough room to       use them

I looked at solid inserts. I think you could be right about the issue of available real estate.

Track of the Wolf has this ovesize nipple that might work.  They of course have the drill & tap too:

EM-OSI-I Nipple, 9-1.25mm metric thread, to REPAIR a variety of imported Italian Enfield muskets, nipple seat must be re-tapped to 9-1.25mm to accept this nipple. musket cap, hardened steel, 1/4" square lug Cone length: 0.475" Thread journal length: 0.275" Overall length: 0.750" Diameter of base: 0.370"

This is almost certainly the way to go. I have an 8mm x 1.25 on the way here. If that doesn’t work the 9mm x 1.25. Will be next. Thanks

Good.  How far is your eyeball from the nipple.  If it stripped out either the nipple or the helicoil from your eyeball.  You can get an entirely new gun cheaper than fake eyeball.

Helicoils are fairly good, but I have stripped many out of the 1963 Corvair Monza I added the turbo charger too. I could recognize the "ping" as a spark plug blew out.

Not related to this thread but I love Corvairs. Had a 63 and 67 when I was a kid. Most fun I ever had on 4 wheels. If I could afford a bucket list a Corvair would be at the top of the list.

Thank God for Track of the Wolf!

With rifle in hand, I confidently go forth into the darkness.

I was looking at Smart-Sert but they are too long to fit in the hole. If I cut them short they lose the locking capability.

About 15 or so years ago Green Mountain made and sold some IBS drop in barrels for TC Hawken type rifles that had heli-coils in the nipple threads.  It was the talk of the forums.  So, inspect one if you ever look to buy a vintage one.

I drilled out the bolster and retapped it for a 9mm/1.25 nipple. Works like a champ.
