Went up country today and scouted out a new area. Took the 12g o/u SKB and the Zastava Hornet. Only downed three hares but had a good look around and it was a grand day out. Load for the Hornet was a NOE 225107 over 7gr Lil Gun for 2250fps lit by a Win small rifle primer. Tack driver load and two from two. First was approx. 70m and a neck shot (could only see its head over the tussock grass) and the second a measured 106m with a slight R-L breeze I allowed for.

Nice Work! Not bad photos either. I used to hunt those fellas with a .22 with standard LR HPs as a school boy in the Willow swamps around the 'Black Lake' at Ohiniwai, Huntly, in the Waikato -which is upper centre Nth Island of NZ for our Northern Hemisphere friends. I discovered that hares are very territorial. If startled they would run off but circle back to where they started . If they could not see you. I would cut across the 'circle' and wait for them. The swamp was semi dry and open with lots of willows and clumps of rushes etc so plenty of cover. It was grazed through by cattle. Range was typically 15 to 30 meters, occasionally out to 50. 22LR did the job and I regularly took hare home for dinner. This was late 1960's.

Nice hunting report. I may do some hare hunting around here this fall/early winter (south-central Alaska). I counted 17 snowshoe hares between the highway and my garage a few days ago, about 1/3rd mile. The population is up this year. Now to decide which lead launcher to use when the time comes, decisions decisions.
There are a couple that stay near the house that are almost tame enough to touch. I hope they stay out of the raspberry patch (fenced) as I agree with my late grandmother: they have all the land around here, EXCEPT the garden and raspberry patches, they enter they die.
Some years back when I was shooting cottontails and jackrabbits my wife would fix an R&R dish, rabbit and rice. Brown the meat in bacon grease, then cook in diced tomatoes, and put over rice when serving. Writing this makes me think I really should get some later this year.
Would you share your jerky preparation please?
