After lurking on this site for a goodly while a couple of years ago, I simply had to have a credible bunny rifle.  So I found a Remington 580 (single-shot rimfire with rear locking lugs), picked up a new take-off Remington 700 barrel (cal. .308W) and sent it all out to Dennis Olson in Montana.  He rebuilt it as a centerfire in cal. .32 S&W Long with a nice Skinner peep on the rear. Very nice work - lovely little 4 lb rifle!

I got it back last year, put about 30 rounds through it (Lyman 115 gr and SAECO 98 gr) and very small charges of Bullseye.  As expected, accuracy at 50 yards was great, at 25 yards was superb.

Unfortunately, my interest in this rifle has waned in preference to big single-shots and 500 gr bullets that carry well to 1000 yds.  So I want to sell my little Bunny Gun, hoping to get $350 or so for it.  Since I got the inspiration for it here, I thought I should offer it here before dropping it on GunBroker.  Please e-mail if interested ([email protected]).  Pics available on request.

Crap. Wish I hadn't read this. Only had a mild interest in converting a 580 yesterday. Interests change quick.... That is perfect.

Keep your plowshare and your sword. Know how and when to use them.

I have just been so busy that I haven't had a chance yet. I did get to shoot it a couple weeks ago with some old plinking rounds and it was a real treat, but developing some loads is not in my immediate plans.

However there will be a Fouling Shot article when I do.

Very nice! Thank you.

Think! It's not illegal, Yet.

Absolutely Lovely! Just the right size for the cartridge.

Lasted one day on the forum, I must check more often.

Very nice!

If we don't start hearing about load development and how it shoots soon, I am going conniption.

Just letting you know.

For the military marching song with the catchiest tune ever, look up:  Youtube

That's a heck of a first step "marching" out of the Dakota.

Sounds like a good recruitment song.

It was probably quite different in Yaounde than in boarding school in Rhodesia in the 1950s, a time when the sun never set on the Empire.

Which reminds me.  For the military marching song with the catchiest tune ever, look up:  Youtube RAR Sweet Banana.  (This was the iconic song of the Rhodesian African Rifles.)

     Missionary childhood

When we were in Yaounde, Cameroon there was an American School for missionary kids.
I felt sorry for the missionary kids.  A bunch of white kids in a black African country, stuck out like sore thumbs.  They couldn't get away with anything.  No matter where they were, someone would see them, and report them to their folks.

Hello David,

Was that rifle originally a 580 Remington or a 580S Remington?

Missionary childhood in (what was then) the Katanga Province of the Belgian Congo.  Definitely an "upcountry" version of Swahili - not the "sweet Swahili" (Kiswahili kitamu) of places like Mombasa and Lamu Island on the Indian Ocean coast.

If anyone would like to try their hand at a CF conversion for the 540/580/590 Remingtons, I have a copy of the instructions that James Calhoon published some years ago.  I found it at artfulbullet.com.  If you want a copy contact me off-list and I will send a pdf.

I would like to take a look at that!!!!
