Finally Cracked MOA Agg. With The PB Coated Bullet In My 06

A trip to the range today with my Winchester 670 was productive. Only thing I did different today was bevel the base of the bullets with a Forster case mouth chamfering tool and dropped the velocity from the 1525 fps I've been shooting down to 1425 using #9. I dont know if it was one or both changes that made the difference and dont really care even if this was a one time affair. It was refreshing coming home with a smile for a change. I'll play with velocity a bit next time out but as of now Im pretty satisfied.

The target that says "Cleaned" on it was the 6th target I shot. When I saw the results I ran two wet and 4 dry patches through the gun. The other three 5 shot groups on that score target were shot after wiping out the barrel. The 10 shot group on that target was the last group of the day. I truly think if I'd have slowed down it would have been better.

If my range visits repeat I'll shoot some 10 shot groups. There's one 10 shot group on the top target. If the high shot, not calling it a flyer because it was probably me, the group would have been around 1.300. I could live with that. 10 shot groups aren't normally on my range time agenda. I'm more a 5 shot group shooter. Might not give the full picture but full enough for me. At least it's better than the 3 shot groups I see a lot of guys shooting down at the range.

To shoot 200 yards at my range is a major pain in the arse. They don't have a 200 yard berm, only 300 for the high power shooters, so you have to bring your own bench and shoot from the 100 yard line and use the pits to raise and lower your targets. And if a high power shooter shows up you only get an hour on that range from the time they show up. Like I said a big pain in the arse and not worth it.

WOW!

Most don't realize that an accomplishment is it to shoot an agg. of 8 five shot groups that averages .86 with a factory rifle and cast bullets. Most shooters would rather talk of individual groups and forget the bad groups. We seldom see that level of precision in either factory rifle class at the CBA Nationals.

That is an accomplishment worth being congratulated on. Looking forward to future shooting.

Yes powder coated plain base. I'm happy but as we all know next time might be a complete disaster so I'm only hopefully optimistic.

Thank you John. I know you've bested it shooting a .223 so you're the one that should be bragging. Now if only it'll hold together when time for the nationals.

Hell Rick I was hoping you'd tell me what I did different this time. One good range trip after 100 bad ones doesnt an expert make.

Thanks for the tip on using a chamfering tool . I bought one on ebay and use it to clean flashing on bullet bases before gc seating.

Those are some nice targets, Pat.

How do you measure that AA#9?  I have to weigh individual charges to get consistency.  The kernels are so small that static electricity is a problem.  I've had dipped charges vary by 1/2 grain or more.

I use a Redding 30br powder measure. I don't weigh anything. In fact I don't even know what the powder charge is since I've been loading to a velocity since playing with this thing. What kind of measure are you using? If you’re using those plastic dippers you could try giving them a rub down inside and out with one of those anti static dryer sheets. It might help
