Hello and happy holidays from down under.

I recently, after a long search, picked up a lovely old Lyman Tru-Line Jnr press to go with my small (but growing) collection of 310 dies and Tong handles.

The press is in excellent original condition but missing the set screw that locks the shell holder in place.

I don't doubt I can go on a successful hunt for one here in metric land but it would be very useful to know the dimensions of the original - diameter, length and thread type/ pitch.

If you have the press it's very obvious which screw it is.

Any info appreciated.

Cheers John

I have one & think I know which screw you are asking about. I changed mine over when I got it to use a "J" (modern) shell holder instead of the Lyman old style holder.
I got the adapter at MidwayUSA. Here is a link & below that, an image of it.:

The hole in bottom front is the screw I think you are talking about.
I cannot find my Thread gauge, but perhaps , if I get the time I will take the screw to a hardware store & use theirs to get the right thread rate/size for you. Be a few days though. The length & width I will try to get for you as well.

Thank you team. I realised there is another set screw holding the primer ram in place a bit lower down. Same thread and about x3 longer than needed. I took it with me and found an old school engineering supply store here in a little village called Stratford. Lo and behold the guy took one look and said " yes, thats a UNC thread, and I have some but as short as you need nor with the nipple end that locates in a receiving hole in the shell holder stem". Anyway I bought x4 at 55c each. I just need to use my Dremel to shorten and grind an approximation of the nipple end. I bought enough to be able to practice lol. Should not be too difficult.

And yes I have the adapter from Lyman to use modern shell holders, and the longer stemmed primer ram to work with it. Pricey but in stock here with one store which was a nice surprise.

I'm having a bit of fun with the 310 dies making 357mag cartridges. I recently bought a new Lyman M die for 38-55 which is a game changer. Getting my head around the 310 dies, I came to realise the expander die works exactly the same. A plug/button that goes down inside the case as far as you want to seat the bullet and then a flaring of the case mouth to start the bullet. The best 357magnum rounds I've ever made! Same for 38-55.

It turns out, no surprise to those knowledgeable, that Lyman sold the expander die basically as two separate parts - the internal plug/stem with a dia stamped on the top, and the die chamber in short, medium and long..as I understand it, you could have one each of the chambers and a collection of stems in different sizes to do different calibres.

308 stems are very common over here and I have several. Will do 308Win, 30-30, 30-06 etc.

Unfortunately my 44-40 die set is missing the expander die. I can use a short chamber from say the 357mag set, but am now on the hunt for the 44cal stem stamped 427 on the top.

If anyone has one, or a full set of 44-40 320 dies they would sell, I have a friend in Oregon I am staying with in October. I could pay now via PayPal and have them shipped to his address.

Im also in the market for other Pistol cal 310 sets.

Anyway. Thanks again for the responses.

J.
