What is the purpose of the center stud on outside chamfer tools? As is the rcbs case mouth tool.

it sometimes helps keeping the tool centered on the case.

I can't see a reason for it being there at all to be honest. I just measured the stud on my RCBS chamfering tool and it was around .157 so don't see it centering too much. My Forster doesn't have the center stud and works the same as the other ones plus I can use it to bevel the bases of my plain base bullets.

When set in a drill press for mass production, the pin helps you guide the case in.

plus you could squeeze a fitted guide bushing on that center pin if you wanted to take that tool up a notch ...
more even chamfering ... although i doubt it would show up on the targets ...

Thanks for starting this thread Ross. I guess you got the answer as to why some chamfering tools have the stud. Gives people something to talk about on a Saturday night when nothing's good on the tube.

It is there to mediate the alignment deviation spannus for the centering datum of the spanaptic spatial coordinate relative to the axial position of the tool when used freehand by the user instead of the linear position in a bench mounted press. Plus it provides the user with a visual proboscis to poke into a hole.
