I know that they aren’t great but I think they have gotten worse. This fresh tin I opened today gave me hang fires and miss fires about 30% of the time today. The cone was cleared and I could blow through the channel. I like Schuetzen and RWS but they aren’t around. I used my flint lock pan primer to fill the cone with ffff and it went off like a rocket to Russia but who wants to piddle around like that?

The CCI are not meant to be used for actually shooting a gun. They are for re enactors only shooting just powder only. Find some RWS or Schuetzen.

I had the same happen with my Pedersoli 1861 rifle and those caps. To get the rifle to fire every time, I removed the clean-out screw from the snail and trimmed it down (made it shorter) to reduce the passage blockage it was causing. If you remove the nipple and look down into the snail and you can see the clean-out screw shaft in there, you too have a snail passage blockage which will make all but the most explosive caps fail to reach the main charge.

Reducing the length of the clean-out screw shaft corrected that problem for me. The CCI caps work just fine on that rifle now. Of course the RWS caps are hotter and if you can get them, usually in a brick of 1000, it is well worth it for the peace of mind they will provide you with.

Reenactors shoot blank cartridges whereby a tissue, paper, or foam "projectile" is tamped on top of the charge of black powder to hold it in place in the barrel and produce some compression to the charge to get a BOOM when fired. Whatever cap you are using still has to reach the main charge from the cone to the propellant, and the cap must have enough oomph to reach the main charge and ignite it.

Reenactor caps generally are less "powerful" than other caps to keep the cost down. You may get more misfires from them due to the lack of "brisiance" (wrong word but one used commonly) they have. They don't have the pizazz some other caps have due to their less than ideal and cheaper chemical makeup.

In a Civil Way reenactment where 150 men are on-the-line firing by rank, the audience is not going to notice that 5 of them had a misfire with their blank cartridges. When using the rifle for hunting or target shooting, the misfire is horrible and of course, noticed by you as your deer trots off into the woodland laughing at you all the way because you did not shorten that clean-out screw (if one exists) on your rifle.

Shortening that screw, if needed, should be done no matter what brand of cap is used. That assumes your rifle has that screw.

I have a 30 year old Euroarms (Navy Arms) 1858 two band with a 1:48” twist. There’s no cleanout of course. Today I gave it a thorough scrub that included the patent breech and flash channel. A 7/32” allen key will pass through the channel . I can draw a slow breath through the barrel with the cone out of it. After doing all this I held a lighter an inch from the muzzle and blew it out with a CCI cap. I have 100 Schuetzen caps that I have been holding in reserve. My local shop carries CCI’s so I like to use them. Most places so far sell 200 primers. Shipping and hazmat makes this unrealistic for me.

Switch it over to a #11 cap and you will be fine. Standard #11 caps have WAY more power than these junk new CCI musket caps. The old CCI caps were a true MAG cap. And the re enactors were getting injured from the cap throwing metal fragments into the shooters. I know first hand. I was popping a couple primers to clear out the breech. One of the wings flew off and went into my forearm. DEEP. I had to go to the ER to have it removed.

And that is why the CCI caps are what they are now.
