breach seating

Has anybody but me tried breach seating bullets in a bolt action? I have a John Ardito .308x1.625 with a long tapered throat. So much so a seated bullet is only head in the case by the gas check. So I started breach seating with a dummy cartridge and the bolt. Shooting up to 2100fps , 200 grain tapered bullet. I've had decent success, but not consistent. The barrel is pitted and I don't know, why all I've used is Hoppes and Ed's red. The throat looks okay.

A friend asked my if this procedure increased gas cutting and other insults and I couldn't Answer him.

What do you all think?  Ross

Both Bev Pinney and Roger Ulrich have competed at Kenmore Range with bolt actions in Plain-Base. They were very competitive.

As Bud noted, when done right yields good results.  Trick is in getting it done right.  As for pitting, I ruined one of my Shilen BS barrels a while back with Hoppes left in the bore over the winter in my safe.  Now I use only Ballistol and even that is dry patched out.  YMMV

I would think that breech seating should help avoid gas cutting not increase it. What is the experience of successful breech seaters as far as that is concerned?

In 2025 I plan to take a stab at BS. Not in a bolt action but a CPA replica Stevens 44 1/2, chambered in .38-55. Local shooter friends have told me (often) that the best accuracy with my REM Rolling Block and the CPA, is by doing BS. You do avoid some case management gyrations. So time will tell but I look forward to the fun.

For years I was under the misconception that the CBA Plain Base Bullet match category required the use of an old (or replica) single shot rifle. John Alexander squared me away on that!

Watch out for that rather deep rabbit hole, Tom.  But once you figure out the powder/primer/wad/seating depth combo you won't be going back to fixed.

The problem I see in using a bolt gun is most cartridges for a bolt are designed for fixed bullets and the thicker necks can cause the seal to fail whereas most single shot cartridges use a much thinner neck.

Some years ago I formed 30 br cases from 308 and 30-06 cases. Total nuisance, don’t do it. In the process of hogging off neck thickness I stuck a gas check shank in a full neck wall thick case and it fit snugly. With a little creativity I was able to breach seat bullets from fixed ammunition. My accuracy was pretty mediocre but I didn’t and don’t know much about shooting plain base rifle bullets. I may revisit this with a tapered bullet.

I am using GC bullets at 2100 fps, 30 gr. Varget, and just some flower foam as a cartridge sealer to hold in the powder.

yes I have with a giant throat 30-06. accuracy was improved once I got the bullet in the throat. 

the throat starts at over .320 (IIRC) and has a long taper (dunno what guy was thinking) and I breech seat a .318 tapered bullet .The barrel is a standard .300 x .308 and the bullet noodles into the bore fine
