RZ - I had an early (#20XX) 1905 carbine.  Accuracy 1.25" for 5 shots at 50 yards, and shooting to the sights, with #3599HP (260 gns) and 40 gns 3031. Barrel .353", throat .359", bullets .360". Critical to fill that throat. Velocity from 17.7" barrel a whisker over 1900 fps. Need to seat those blunt bullets pretty deep so they run through the magazine.

Jacketed 250 gn .358" bullets (Norma and Hornady) fine with 42 gns 3031. Throat looks after sizing (check your throat). Kynoch 9x56 bullets were about .355" or .356".

Lighter 200 gn bullets shot far too high to be useful. Stick to 250+.

Cases Kynoch berdan, reformed Norma 9.3x57, reformed WRA (military) 8x57.

Rifle uses Mauser stripper clips.

Back when I was messing around with 6.5 x 54 M/S and 8 x 56 M/S, the Mannlicher's Collector's Association was a good source of loading info for these rifles.  I would not extrapolate data from the Mauser-made competing cartridges--the early M/S actions are not quite as stalwart as the Mauser 98 actions are.  I do have a M/S Gewehr 98/40 that has no issue digesting Euro-spec 8 x 57 ammo, though.

Some back-editions of Cartridges of the World by Barnes et al did contain detailed loading data that wasn't 'adventurous'.

Thanks for the history and data. I enjoy reading this kind of details. You guys went a long way toward answering all my questions. This is a sweet gun. The only thing missing is a bolt end aperture sight. I am hoping to find one designed for this model. Thanks Brothers, RZ.

That is one caliber that I have always wanted but have never owned.

Have fun,

Mashburn I fell into one through a friend. A nice example but used enough to be no safe queen. I got all dies for reloading, bullet sizing, and lots of reformed cases. He sent bullets, some jacketed already sized to 0.354. Some hawk jacketed were only .353 so I decided to powder coat. We will see how that works out. I don't have the sacrificial toaster oven yet. A great looker with double triggers, stutzen stock, and G&H QD mount with scope. I can only wish for an aperture sight. Be. Well Brothers, RZ.

No reloading ideas RZ, but I did want an 8x56 MS pretty badly. Never finding one, I wound up buying a G 98/40, though mine is sportered, in 8x57.

There are 40 rounds of Western 8x56 in the study that probably ought to be passed on to someone who can use them. If that interests you give me a PM. Not interested in the bother of shipping them, but I am in the 417 area code of Missouri.

Only 8X56 I ever saw was a full stock with set triggers and a really neat receiver sight.  Don't recall if the sight was a Lyman or Redfield but the staff was spring loaded and pivoted so that the bolt would swing it out of the way either to the front or back and it would snap back into position by itself.  This was 50+ years ago and still recall it clearly, beautiful rifle.
