High Velocity PB Loads

I started testing higher than “normal” velocity PB bullets and I'm wondering if anyone on this forum has also played with it.

I'll start by saying that the reason behind this is, in ASSRA and ISSA we can not use GC's and I'm trying to capitalize on the capabilty of sharp pointed long ogive bullets to lessen wind drift. My short term goal is 1800 fps with a plain base and then move up slowly to as high as I can go, maybe 2000 - 2200.

The targets and bullet pictures are self explanatory  but, these groups were shot at 100 yds on a 200 yd target. Only the .780 group could be cosidered competitive but, would only place in the top 5 at a actual match. I need to improve by about 1/3 to be competitive.

As you can see these first experiments are with IMR 4227. I started with 16.5 gr, move up one tenth then down in one tenth increaments. What I would like to know is, if anyone has used slower powders for the higher velocitys in PB. I plan to use 2015, 1680, RL7 as my next powders, in that order.

The 2 bullets that I used are pictured, the 3rd from left is my 323366 PB and the far left is a Paul Jones, standard tapered bullet. The weights are 186 for the Lyman and 208 for the PJ. Both cast in 23/1 lead/tin. BTW, the 323366 has a BC of .457

I had no leading, at all, using Smiley Lube (30% BW/70% Alox) and I used no wads.

Any suggestions or comments?

i also am impressed .... hoping you get a chance to try 4198/3031/4895 , even if it's a little dirty ... and you might need a fatter base band ..

dang you guys tempt me to get back into accuracy shooting ! guilt overwhelms me just having fun ... besides i am down to just a few hundred bean cans ... ( g ) ..

Interesting, keep us posted on your progress.

I have been doing the same thing for a couple of months now, when the weather permits. The rifle is a purpose built schuetzen 32-40 using an original 1885 action built some time back in the eighties. The twist is also 1/15.

Have been getting some decent groups so far with IMR 4227 and a D. Moss bullet at 100yds with both fixed and breach seated. Have yet to move out to 200.

Very interesting! I suppose that you are breech seating those bullets? Are you using a card or wad behind the bullet? I have wondered a few times about trying something like what you are doing with slower powders and maybe even trying some shot buffer as a filler for better combustion and seal for plain base bullets.

Keep up the good work and let us know how it works out.

I've tried it,,, oddly enough it was right before I spent two weeks scrubbing and soaking the bore on my Pristine Lyudmilla (a gorgeous 91-30 I hooked up with a few years ago.)

Yes, they are breech seated.

No wads or fillers of any kind.

I'm not sold on fillers but, I will try plastic wads in the case mouth and BSed with the bullet.

more ! more! ken Ken,

I've got both 4198 and 3031 but, the problem with both of them is they are very hard to measure accurately. I load one case at the bench and can't weigh the charges. I will try 4895, varget, RL15 and 2520 when I get in that burn rate.

You know that you guys can breech seat bolt actions, Bev Pinney uses a bolt rifle BSed in CBA matches and wins his share of matches.

Shhhish!:wnk: Need to keep that a secret breech seating will never be the same again.

Paper patch?

frnkeore posted this 14 April 2013

I've shot lubed, cross paper patching in slug guns 20 years ago, while they are accurate they also wear barrels when fed a steady diet of them. Also, I have the bullets I want to shoot and they have a high BC and breech seat easlily.

I guess I should just say that I'm commited to these (pictured) lubed, GG bullets.

Thank you for the suggestion.

I had trouble getting CONSISTENT good results with plain based bullets. Several alloys were tried (1-20, 1-18, 1-16) etc. May have been the lube, the bore or ME! I went back to gas checks and/or Teflon tape.

j, Can you tell me more about what load you shot? Cartridge, bullet, powder and velocity? I'm guessing it was fixed ammo and not breech seated?

You might try the lube I used 30%BW/70% Alox or my other lube that I've shot to 2150fps (323471) GCed is 30% lithium grease/ 70%BW.

OF COURSE it was fixed ammo! Only UN fixed ammo I shoot is MUZZLE loaded. I tried it in several calibers from 30-30 to 45-70. I tried “HOT” loads down to “cat sneeze” loads. Being lazy (and cheap), I was looking for an easy out for a hunting load. It was easier to just patch with paper or Teflon tape. Gas checks were even easier to apply and shot ALMOST as well. I did try some Breech seating YEARS ago. My grand father had an old gun that he'd shove the bullet into the chamber, then put the cartridge shell in. Close the action and fire. He killed a few deer with it and shot it in some “turkey shoots". He let me shoot it a few times. Thanks for the memories!

After I get done with the Nationals I'll give this high velocity a shot. Believe that I'll start with 4198 though. I'll be using a 32-40 breech seated.

Frank Try Benchmark Similar to 3031 in burn rate easy to measure, size is like 4227

Try Varget. Same as 4064 but measures easy.

frnkeore posted this 03 September 2013

My next powder will be AA2015 then Varget, AA2520, H4895, because I have them. But, Benchmark fits well between 2015 and Varget so, I'll have to get some if the powder ever comes back.

Nimrod, keep us informed, I'll also try 4198 (I have it) if you have any luck, but it doesn't meter well.

I had a oppertunity to test my Paul Jones bullet on Barry Darr's Oehler M43, last month, with the following results:

16.1 gr 4227

Velocity 1546, SD 8, ES 24

Measured B.C., .392

This is a 12 shot group @ 100. I was only shooting to get the shots off to measure the BC and wasn't watching the conditions. It's a 12 shot because he had to reboot the M43 after it didn't up the first 2 bullets.
