yesterdays massacre and what will flow from it

Hi guys,

another horrific massacre on a parr with Australia's Port Arthur, only worse because of the age of the victims.

Prepare for a knee jerk response from our political leaders both in the US and Australia. Both our respective leaders are looking around for something to hang there popularity on: Obama needs a new 'defining movement' for his second term and Primeminister Gillard needs to pull a rabbit out of the hat to have even a vague chance of being re elected next year.

These are dangerous times for our sport. It's probably different in the states but here we already are perceived as somehow deviant. This is only going to make it worse.

Good luck to you all,

James

The liberals will certainly go for more gun control. But we all no exactly what that will get them, higher crime. There is a lot of various suggestions on Facebook, some good some bad. It may be worth a look to see what people are saying.

What “they” don't seem to understand is that even in a “nice, quiet, affluent” town like this, evil can arise unexpectedly. I grew up here. My sons grew up here. The shooter grew up here. The media and politicians will never understand that disarming the teachers and private citizens near a school only creates, as we can see, a target rich environment. I personally thought there was a police officer in each school, here, but it turns out that is only at the high school. I think THAT is going to change. The guns the shooter used were legal, owned by his mother, whom he murdered first..... Watch, they will start to say the presence of his mother's guns caused the evil.....

+10.  Same thing with a military base...  just defies all sane logic!  I posted a very long rant (prob best description) on another forum I am a member of.  There is only one process to stop this...

Offhand I know it hurts when it hits as close to home as this has for you. For that I am sorry you had to deal with it. When all of the wonderful liberals removed morals from school, released all of the mental patients into the population in the 60's and now have very few facilities to deal with mental health, they really screwed everyone over. It is very sad...

Thank you, Jeff. I am sure that when the list of names comes out, I will know at least one of the parents who lost someone. I was having a conversation with someone at church just last week as to why I carry every minute I can . It is why I wear a suit on Sunday......it is really horrible that discussion is now punctuated with this......

The liberal that let all the mental patients go in California in the 60's and 70's was Governor Ronald Reagan.

I think a really useful response would be to seek a link between the evil nutter's that perpetrate this type of horror and their use of video games of the type that enhances their ability to de empathise.

The games are every where these days, although no video games in my house for my two boys age 5 and 7, who go camping out bush and hang out whilst dad shoots his gun, along with the compulsory safety lecture...

So I think we need to hit the games. If there were a whole bunch of games along the lines of 'Judge Dread' or what ever the show was that depicted a game where scores were added to by hitting pedestrians with ones cars, then we'd be getting auto massacres.

Anyway, I have little to hang this theory on except a great book entitled 'On killing' that looked at the changes the US military made in its troop training from the time SLAM Marshall did his first work that showed that only 20% of WW2 US troops actually fired their weapons in an engagement to post Vietnam where the figure had risen to over 80%. this was linked to training with simulators (read 'video games) that got soldiers over their reluctance to kill others.

Cheers

James

Deepest condolences to all concerned from across the pond in Australia. I live within the state where the Port Arthur shootings took place and I don't know that you ever really get over it. All one can do is support those who are hurting and hope that govt's learn that mental illness is real, and these people need help. AND NOT, just focus on guns and firearm restrictions as the sole cure for such horrible waste of life.

It truly is a sad day, the repercussions to endure for all of us for a long time.

It's no wonder from teachings in which all life has come from a primordial slime and that mankind has evolved out of animals, leaving a void disregarding the sanctity and value of each and every person. In that where evil can then fill it, love is lost even toward a mother.

Call it mental health if you will, but is evil running to and fro........

More are killed by drunk drivers than firearms and this data is rarely mentioned. I liked how Obama kept wiping his left eye until someone typed onto his podium screen to wipe the other one too so it looks realistic. His claim of concern is a Trojan Horse, he just wants the guns. What do you do to end serial rape, take our penis from us? Its unfortunate and sad but it can't be stopped. Sick minds will kill when they want and they'll just find other means to do it. We all know a gun doesn't kill, the operator is the killer. The government is and always will be looking up the ass of the problem.

Once they dealt with the threat as a threat and eliminated the perps as they tried to accomplish their evil deeds on the spot things changed fairly rapidly. I don't remember the time frame but it was schools and buses, IIRC. Haven't heard much about that issue in a while. Many people of various ages and backgrounds feel it is their duty to protect the life of innocents. And they do it.

My prayers are with the families and people of Newtown, Ct.

For the record, I'm horrified at the events in Connecticut. The guns will be demonized, and the murderer portrayed as some poor, sick misunderstood youth. If he had simply stolen his moms car and driven it through a crowded playground, would it have even made the news? Maybe for a day or so...

The problem is the mentally  ill  people.

And here in Italy it is illegal to let mad people have access to guns.

The west is declining ,political correctness is a screen to cover  stupidity and cowardice.

The facts were that the kid used a 9mm Sig and Glock to do the killing. He left two other weapons in his vehicle including a 223 rifle. Lester Holt last night on the evening news stated that most of the shots fired were from a 223 Bushmaster. This is a good example of how we're fed what the government wants us to believe. The FCC controls the televsion networks and since Vietnam, we're told what they want us to believe, not what's really happening. Most people alive today don't remember how television news coverage used to be and the FCC is taking advantage. Last nights coverage of the shooting wouldn't have been any worse if it was reported that Santa Clause did it.

Latest reports indicate that the guy wasn't mentally ill in the clinical sense: had Asburger's syndrome and probably some kind of personality disorder.

Both of these issues are likely to reduce a persons ability to empathise.

But the really interesting thing in the reports is the fact (I use that term loosely here, given its the media reporting!) that this guy was heavily into violent shoot 'em up video games.

This, as I've previously posted, should be where the thrust of our efforts to protect our sport focus.

And what's happened to the NRA? I haven't seen much out of them yet. I really hope you guys can sort this fall out over there.

Nothing has cropped up on the local level in Australia yet, although its tough to know what they can take off us now as we were pretty well gelded after Port Arthur when the government spent something like $3 billion buying back all the 'assault weapons' including my Browning take down semi auto .22 that was chambered only for shorts...

Still, bolt actions are OK... its like being back in the early 1900's..

Good luck guys,

James
