"If” anyone is finding wheelweights for sale what is the going rate for raw unsmelted ones ?

Thanks. What I have done so far does have some zinc WW in it. But kept the temp around 630 or so, and fished those out.

We shoot Cowdoy Action. So around 850fps is around our range.

For customers later on. Have some 92-6-2 mix I am getting by the ton in 25# ingots. But will use the WW ingots for our personal bullets. And to get use to the equipment.

The Magma Bullet Master, and Lube Master has not go here yet. So just making the ingots for when it does. 

The building will be completely finished by then also. It's getting close. If I can ever work on it. Just had surgury so having to wait to finish some of it. 

 

I am sure I will be back here asking question before to long. Did get to go to another Bullet Company and they showed my a lot. They are useing the same equipment.

The last two buckets of wheel weights I bought (about 150lb/bucket) were about 20-30% zinc and steel weights. Can't use them suckers. Don't forget if you are going to push your bullets to anywhere around 1,000fps or more put some linotype in with the wheel weights or you gonna lead up pretty good. Wheel weights are usually OK for 850fps or less, but sounds you got a good price for them.

Hey. New here. I just got about 1300 pounds of WW for .25 cents a pound. Started making ingots out of them today. New to casting bullets. Equipment on it way. May be another month before it gets here. Also getting a few tons of 6-2 mix. So I should be ready to go when the equipment is ready. Just built a new building for it all.

What I'm using now came from my original hording from 10 years ago !

Think I got close to 2 tons .

FOR FREE , had a friend that had a small tire shop and he'd let me have them just to get them outta the way !

Later another friend had a tire shop and I asked him one day what he was gonna do with his weights . he had maybe six 55 gallon drums full . Told me to take what I wanted or all if I wanted . About that time I was moving to PA for a few months and fingured I'd get them when i returned !

You know the answer to that story !

They were ALL gone when I got back :(

 

If I had gotten the 6 or so drums he had I woulda been set for life in the USA !

One place no one has mentioned is your local car dealer. If you buy your cars from one dealer they will more than likely give you what they have for nothing. That's how I got a 30 gal. drum full a coupla years ago.

I purchased some wheel weights, about 100#. But you must BEWARE they are mainly zinc or aluminum. The markings are really hard to learn about as different manufactures use different marks. p pb mc al zn etc. My college professor friends and their colleagues indicate that if it was easy to separated, smelt, refine etc. everyone would be doing it. I have a very hard head and I'll give most anything a try. Self educating I suppose. Here is a good test.
With your known pot just melting say 675 degF. Place a weight in the melt, if it floats at all get it out. Time consuming but I'll guarantee it will telltale. Do not raise the temperature, otherwise you will have an impossible mess, I know.

I have pretty much taken the attitude that when what I have here in Virginia runs out I'll just buy from a foundry and get what they call Lyman #2 !

 

Now in the Philippines I'm gonna have to get back over there and see what the situation is like !

True I have 220 pounds of unmelted clip on weights , but if I could get 500 kilo's that will last me plenty long over there !

In order to give this thread an update, I will report that I checked with a salvage yard the other day in west Texas and was quoted $0.90/lb. for a bucket of clip on wheel weights. Got some free an a tire store instead. Did note that about 1/3 of the weights were steel or zinc, so you're not getting a whole lot of lead.

Well I sent $ over the other day to my wife . She has found me about 150 kilo's which equates into 330 pounds and I think the whole pile is gonna cost me about $75 .

That should be plenty to keep me satisfied over there for a number of years !

I am getting some strange comments from my wife in the Philippines !

I had earlier asked her to see if she could get any old wheelweights from scrap yards in her city !

 

I would not be surprised if she hasn't sent her 16 year old nephew out looking for them for me and possibly even gotten me 50-100 pounds for my use when I come for visits !

I have a deal with some of the local tire shops and I get a 5gal bucket full (about 150-200lbs) for $10.00. The deal is that I show up at least every two weeks or they sell them to someone else. You wanna cast boolits with ww's, then get friendly with your local tire shops. Forget WalMart, they sell them to battery companies for battery plates. I have about 500lbs stored and next week will add to it. Store, store, store because like in Washington, they ain't gonna be around for long!

Well I am not in bad shape here in Virginia !

 

And I asked my GF/Finacee/Wife to see if she could find out if I can buy scrap wheelweights in the Philippines . I am thinking 100 kilos (220 pounds) over there would last me several years !

I can't decide now whether to take a nice old Marlin 444 over there or just take a Encore or H&R Handi Rifle with a 444 barrel !

If I loose or it's stolen the two singles mentioned won't bother me so much !

But if I lost one of my children (the 444 Marlin's) I would be more then a little upset :X

i am lucky i have a couple tons of wheel weights and 250lb. of lino. not much more than 500lb of soft lead. my goal is to live long enough to shoot it all up. and be healthy enough to shoot the last shot at somewhere over 100 yrs old. joe gifford aka argie1891

I seem to remmember someone actually selling new alloy that was called “wheelweight” .

 

A ton here and maybe a 200 pounds in PI and I'd be set for a good while !
