Speeding up the forum...

I really enjoy “our” forum, here. However, it is the SLOWEST forum on the planet. I am NOT, by any means, a computer wizard, but it seems to me that we could be a LOT faster (it takes forever to move from one topic to another, etc).

Generally, the only thing that stops a “speed up” is lack of money to upgrade to later technology.

If that is the case, what do you think of starting a voluntary campaign to raise money. We have enough members to get the job done.

I suggest a nominal $5.00 donation from each of us that enjoys this and can afford it, to speed up the operation.

Is this possible AND practical? I have participated in a similar drive on another of my favorite forums and it happened so fast it made our collective heads spin..

Just a thought...

What do YOU think?

For me I'm stuck at slow. All I have to work with in the OLD MODEM, unless I sell the house and go with satellite. When pigs fly! But if the seed takes root, I'll kick in some sunshine.

I have a fairly slow DSL connection and this forum works fine for me.  I haven't really noticed any difference between it and the half dozen or so others I look at daily.

Test your speed here.  http://www.speedtest.net/>http://www.speedtest.net/

I just got 2.52 Mb/s download and .29 Mb/s upload.

It's definitely slower than any others I've been on, I figured it's a cast bullet thing. Anyway, I'll kick in 5$ if it comes to that.

I'm sure Jeff or some BOD members will chime in here eventually. I'm all for it, but the CBA is not like other foriums. We are part of a non-profit organization and there are tax implications. Someone, a few months ago, suggested a raffle or something along those lines, but we were unable to do it because of legal issues.

We do have an issue with bandwidth, I believe, because we share servers with another group. At least we did. Maybe we could figure the cost of an independant server and ask the membership if they would be willing to pay a special assessment to upgrade? But then the issue gets stickier. The CBA exists outside this forum and there are alot of members that do not use the forum while many folks that are not members do. So, you can see, it's not as easy as it might seem.

There are times when it is a bit slow, but a faster server wont fix the problem. It is a matter of location and the traffic on the internet for the most part. I know the server farm just made a move to a larger facility that should help with that. The other problem is the software used to run the forum. It simply put is not the best, but it is not the worst. It was cost effective at the time. The database the forum uses has grown to 300 MB which is a lot of info that has to be searched through each time someone loads a page.

Dollar Bill is right, it is not as easy as it seems, but then we all have budgetary issues nowadays...

On roadrunner,17.26 download, .49upload, doesn't seem slow to me. Maybe I'm too slow to notice.

Jeff; I have a suggestion. IF it is practical (you make the call, of course) try to determine HOW MUCH to make it better. Once that is known, then it becomes relatively easy to determine if the USERS (that's US on the Forum) can afford it.

I don't suggest a membership )a lot of us are already CBA Members). What I do suggest, if it appears doable that we simply ask for donation PLEDGES. If the pledges appear to be enough to do it, then ask for the pledge money. When the money is in hand, do it!

How does that sound?

I do KNOW that I am SICK TO DEATH of getting 25 requests for money per day through the mail or telelphone (in spite of “DON'T CALL US").

However, this is merely a suggestion as to how WE can materially improve OUR “Ride” on this Forum. No implied threats, no coercion, just a simple request to help ourselves with a small donation.

If the cost is impractical for the number of users then we can just continue to limp along.

Fair enough?

Like Jeff said it must depend on where you live. I'm posting on my Blackberry now and the pages are loading quickly.

The move to the new data center was completed about an hour ago so things should move along much better now.

Myself I notice a dramatic increase in page load speed, I hope it is that way for everyone.

Sometimes patience is a useful virtue..

A facility move is a large undertaking, can you imagine moving and entire neighborhood in an hour? That is what happened today, we got our turn.

Not that the move have been without issue, and there are a couple right now, but the speed isnt one of them..

Now let's see:

On October 27 at 7:34 P.M I raise the question of improving speed on page loading on THIS forum.

On October 29 at 10:53 A.M. Jeff announces that the problem is solved. AND IT IS!! Hallelujah!!

Jeff, you are a MAGICIAN!!

You know what they say, “Ask and yea shall receive"...

Thanks to all who made this possible (even tho' I had NOTHING to do with it :dude:)

P.S. It is SO much nicer to browse here, now.

Not that i do not appreciate the praise, the timing was mear coincidence.

I knew the server was being moved to a new data center about mid September, I just didnt make an announcement simply because when you do something like a data center move, there are problems especially when there are multiple servers being moved. Of course there was because the initial announcement from the IT manager said it would all take about a week and that was over a month ago.

When dealing with IT people and webmasters their calendars and time estimates are much different than in real life.

If I say something is going to take a week, plan on a month because what always seems simple, never is.
