Bought 30+ pounds at an auction for $20.  Has anyone used this with lead for casting.

Would 10 pounds of lead and one pound of Cerrocast be suitable for casting 45-70 bullets.

On sources of casting metals.  I have purchased from Rotometals in Cal. They shipped 20 pounds tin by first class mail from Cal to NC in 3 days with no shipping charges.

Welcome to the site!  If you have what I think, it's a chamber casting lead (wouldn't that be expensive to cast into bullets?).  Cerrosafe, the chamber casting stuff is low temperature from what I've read.  Maybe one of these guys knows what you've got there.

thats probably for casting chambers et cetera. 30 lbs is a BIG chamber. maybe you should sell me enough to do a chamber real cheap!

Let's see: cast it into one pound ingot moulds, sell for $10 a pop, make 40 of them. Nice profit!

What I have is Cerrocast not cerrosafe.  Cerrocast melts at a little higher range than safe and is composed of 60% tin and 40% bismuth.  It contains no lead.

Just wanted to know if it would be suitable for casting and how much to use if it is.

Thanks!!

Just found this site yesterday.  Good info here!!

In that case, you have a good source of tin although I don't know what bismuth is. Try Rotometals or Bill Ferguson, they can tell you more!

That is a LOT of tin for the $$. I have tried MANY varieties of ” mystery metal” when casting for different guns. I would try the 1/10 mix .Cast a few and see what they look like and how hard they are when cool. IF all is good, then cast a potfull or 2! It comes to around 1 in 20 tin to lead so should be good for black powder speeds in the 45-70

Bismuth has been used for some years as a replacement for lead in waterfowl shotshells, due to it's low toxicity, compared to lead and is close to lead in density. I checked this site: http://www.alchemycastings.com/lead-products/fusible.htm>http://www.alchemycastings.com/lead-products/fusible.htm and it has some interesting info. I'd definitely give Bill Ferguson a call. You have an interesting alloy to play with.

I came into some Bismuth a few years ago and mixed it with tin and cast some Lee 430-310 with a 50/50 mix it behaved like linotype. Very expensive way to go but nontoxic. Bullet weight was 240gr sized and lubed with GC.
