Primer shortage

There apparently is a shortage of all sizes of primers, at least in the Tidewater, VA area.  I recently went to five gunstores and was told essentially the same thing in all five.  Retail establishments are all reporting that primers are getting harder and harder to come by.  One store recently got three cases out of an order of twelve and placed a restriction of a hundred primers per customer.  I was told by the store manager that he is having great difficulty locating primers among his suppliers and that he sees no relief in sight.

Is this just a local problem or is it wide-spread?

Widespread. Green Top in Ashland has had no primers for quite a while. Gilberts in Newington has only a few if you want to pay $50 per M for them. They have also been limiting range sales of ammo to one box per customer per visit.

I got 10M of WSP from Grafs @ $27.95/M about a month ago, but they are now out too.

Midway is also out.

All the companies are at max production capacity, but demand is crazy because everybody is hoarding them. Same with ammo. Federal-ATK produces primers for the military at its Anoka facility so commercial the pipeline is curtailed to feed added capacity needed at LC.

If people would not buy into the feeding frenzy demand would wane and supply should improve in a year or so. Price gouging will soon be a deterrent to anyone buying anymore. They don't have to ban guns if nobody can afford ammo.

Isn't that the truth. Went through the same nonsense when Clinton got elected. If they ban everything what good are 10 million primers going to do you anyway?

Obviously I'm not the “Cold Dead Fingers” type of guy, I'd rather keep my “Warm Live Ones” thank you.

Well said.  I have told the guys on Boolits to pull their heads in and stop all the talk.  It just causes more panic.

stopped by a local gun store yesterday they had several thousand primers, but said they are going to put them on gunbroker so they can get more money for them. It let me see how much they care about serving the public. joe gifford aka argie1891

Shortages are here in Montana too. My local trading post usually has a lot of primers of all varieties but now they are selling what comes in as fast as they can get it priced.

About the shop who pulled their primers to put them on Gun Broker? I'd never darken their door again. Moreover, I'd let them know that all the supplies and ammo I used to buy from them will now be purchased on line. What goes around, comes around...~AMMOe

A local retailer I used to deal with instigated his rationing policy again recently.  He wants buyers to purchase 100 projectiles with every 100 primers.  His theory is this helps everyone keep shooting.  Bah humbug I say.  He doesn't cater for us casters.  I ordered online from a supplier in the North Island and bought 2300 primers at the same price (actually, possibly slightly less) and had them delivered.

Same here. About 3 weeks ago my prairie dog shooting buddy Larry called one of our local shops to see if they had any primers. The answer was “yes". Larry said I'll make the hour drive to come up and buy 1,000 or 2,000. The store owner asked how many bullets he was going to buy? Larry said “None, I don't need bullets.” The store owner said “I don't have any primers"!!!!!

So, does anybody know who DOES have primers right now? I'd order a M each of large mag pistol and small mag pistol right off the rip.

Hi barney, I hear some catalog companies are taking back orders. I know a guy who has a couple M on back order from MidSouth Shooters Supply.

I talked to Ron at Sinclair last night and they have ZERO primers and very limited powder on hand. He said they havent had any primers for a couple of months.

I would say if the online companies are allowing backorders, I would place and order and be patient.

They same goes for bullets, powder, cases.. everything is backordered.

Same here in Pa. with the primer situation. Also folks are going nuts buying so called black guns. Hope we never get to the point of really needing one to defend our liberty. I guess there will be lots of them lying aroung if it gets to that point. I wish I could buy primers. May cooler heads prevail, Flashman

Thanks for the info, Flashman. Unfortunately, I'm of the opinion that our society is spiraling into chaos at an increasing rate. Keep your powder dry.

I set up a notification at Midway to let me know when some 30 cal bullets came in stock, in the time it took me to put them in the shopping cart they went on back order again.

I heard tale that there are some people that spent big buck and are hording thinking they are going to make a killing.. Boy I got bad news for them, I have enough to get by for a while and they will get no extra cash to line their greedy wallets from me!

I also hope we do not have to go to the point to defend our freedoms.

Speaking of that, how about that turncoat Spector?? More worried about his record than the people he represents.. Sad state of affairs.

Around here we can still get LR & LP every now and again and they're charging just a slightly inflated price. $27 & $30 a 1000. Went to a gun show (600 tables) this weekend and there were only 2 cartons of SR primers at $50 & $70 a 1000. As for the black rifles, I think the rush is over. They were all over the show and in the stores, and wholesale warehouses, and the prices are only slightly inflated from Pre-Obama.

The thing that's bugging me is I could use another can of AA#9. Can't find any anywhere. Even a friend that works for a wholesaler says they don't have any either.

Pete, I have a .lb of #9 I'd swap you for a pound of Red Dot, if you have that to spare. Been wanting to try The Load. Or Bullseye would be ok, if you don't have Red Dot. You can pm me if you're interested. I got an 8 pounder of #9 about 10 yrs. ago, still good, about half left. I've used the #9 in a duplex load in my Ruger Old Army, shoots a lot cleaner, no pressure issues I can see. Got to use it to scare away bothersome bears in the Trinity Alps, the muzzle flash at night is awesome. DISCLAIMER: Never use smokeless powder in a black powder gun.!

 tt,

Would like to take you up on your offer but don't have any Red Dot, and less than a pd. of BE which I need for target shooting. Didn't know BE was getting scarce.

  Thanks for the offer tho.
