I have a 308x1.75. 1x10 twist

It has never shot the way I think it should. 

Any Suggestions?

hey, I might have a couple of rifles just like that ...  I arrived at the same solution as above.  

i label them as " useful accuracy " rifles.  kinda like calling a wimmin critter a " good cook " ...

Well it shoots ok! it is a 308 win. shortened .200.

A couple of inches at 100yds.

Yes it is a wildcat..... Good barrel, match trigger.  A good scope.

I use 4227  or 2400 for powder.

I have had the gun for over five years. It should shoot better! any thoughts on powder? I have 30 plus molds!!!

A lot of things come to mind. Do a chamber cast and see just what you have. A shortened case has thicker brass at the neck than normal, do you need to turn the necks? What kind/size of the leade. What length should the brass be?

a chamber cast is a good idea.

I already turn down the necks to .012 thickness.

I trim the brass to 1.75.

Powder / Primers?

any suggestions?

My 308x1.625 likes powders like n133,n135, r7,varget, even r19. You might do well with a slower powder.

I have been trying to think of ways to get this ctg to shoot better. I have a bunch of Varget and 

 some n111. Ill be trying that.  I think I will back engineer my reloading techniques also.  Its time to step back and look at what I'm doing!

I have a 308 Bergara M-14, I think that's the  model It will shoot J bullets great but not cast either.  So here we go!!!

2" is pretty good for as cast, but I am sure you could do better with a properly fitted and bumped bullet. Bumping or squeezing bullet more round and snug fit should work. I like Reloader 7.

You could also try soft alloy (10 bhn) that conforms to throat when fired. Try a faster powder like titegroup.

At the risk of sounding Dr. Phil wannabe; Is there an area of loading for this rig that you feel is causing you the most trouble? Fit,burn rate,bullet quality issues,etc?

i get more hits toward my core group of plain-base 30 cal ...

if i

taper the inside of necks so that 

the bullets are only gripped near the base.

i use a tapered expander i made to do this ... you could try on 3 brass and reload at the bench for testing.

if you have a close neck chamber you might have to taper ream or i guess straight ream the clearance.  my factory neck lets me expand a factory brass neck outward a tad.

and yes, try some slower powders ... RL7, up to 4895 ....

then of course, even cast rifles need good bedding ...  

let me know if you need a simple tapered expander ... i have a month before ice forms on my lathe ...  heh ...

Good point Ken. Minimizing the case grip to only the bullet base or only to the gas check is an under appreciated detail.  It allows the bullet to self align as it seats in the throat.  John Ardito's chambers were designed to have only the gas check, and not much more,  touching the case mouth. This led to some controversy at the time and to the old "Shake test" to make sure his rounds had bullets firmly seated. The shake test in no longer in our rules. John is responsible for the much of what we know about cast accuracy but that part has generally been forgotten. In my match loads the bullet is only held by the very back and I'm convinced it helps.

I doubt that it makes a difference in a perfect tight neck chamber, but it is something to consider for those of us in the unwashed multitudes.

A tapered expander, i have not heard of that.   New powders to try.  It will be a busy year!

start with a chamber cast, determine leade taper, bump to taper. start with 30 gr varget and go up or down from there. works good in a 30br.
