.250 Savage

I'm wondering how many folks on this forum are casting and shooting for the .250 Savage in a bolt action rifle.

I'll start by saying that I use a Savage model 16 with a 22" barrel and 1:10 twist.

My favorite load is 14.3g of Reloder 7 behind a Saeco 25-100 bullet, Winchester large pistol primer. I powder coat the bullet and so far have used air cooled 10:1 alloy(ww:lino).

My groups at 100 yards are usually in the 1 inch to 1.5 inch area for 5 SHOTS.

I'm about to try quenching the powder coated bullets to see if groups get any smaller.

Wish I had a 250 Savage.  If I did, it would be in a Savage 99!  I do, finally, have a 25 cal - 257 Roberts - another bucket list for me!  It is in a custom Mauser.

Thinking I will become enamoured of the 25(s?!?) as I am of the original 6.5 ->  6.5x55 Swede!!!!  i have 3 of those!

I have a Savage Model 1920 with a 1/14 twist. It has a cocking piece aperture sight. Best cast load, and only one accurate at 100 yards, is the RCBS 25-85 CM with 4.0 grains of WW231.

I use the NOE 260-80-RF in my Model 99 EG in 250 Savage. It has the old 1-14" twist and needs a short bullet.

In a Ruger 77 RSI with a 1:10 twist I have used both 257464 and 257312 88 grain with Lyman checks and 50/50 lube sized .258. Usually I use WW and add enough linotype or solder to get the diameter I want. The 257464 works better when I only lube half the grooves and will run around 2.5" -3" 5 shot groups at 100. With the 257312 I see groups around 2" at 100. Considering the short thin barrel and the bedding along with the old B&L variable and the Ruger trigger I can live with it.  I have been using the last of my SR4759 but will soon be out so I'm open to ideas for something else that might work.

My biggest issue with this rifle is finding brass.  I looked through my manuals and it looks like the best candidate for forming brass is .260 Rem. Anyone here got any ideas on the subject?

As to rifles, as much as a Savage 99 would be fun the prices on them are beyond my reach. There is probably a decent 722 out there somewhere. I have forever regretted not grabbing a 700 classic I saw in a shop about 1990. By the time I went back for it I was too late. Seems like I've done that a lot in my life.

Necking up 22-250 brass is the only way to go; cheap and available.

If you ever want to sell that little 1920 Savage, let me know. I do, however, prefer the .300 savage in that little rifle.

I believe that I have some .250 brass, but I am sure it would take hours to find. I used to own a little Ruger 77 Manlichner in that caliber, yes, I know that I mis-spelled that word. Wish I still had it.

I was aware the .250 was the parent of the Varminter, for some reason I was wondering if sizing up would result in a thin neck that was prone to splitting. Apparently not, now I know. Next time I see some .22-250 brass I'll stock up. One thing about .260 brass is that every once in a while, Starline will run a batch and they make the best rifle brass I have ever used.

The main reason i have kept the Ruger RSI is that I like the way it looks and I like the cartridge. It certainly isn't a target rifle. I also have a couple .257 Roberts rifles and I really like that cartridge as well. No brass around for them either. As much as I like .25's there doesn't seem to be much commercial interest in them. I think Ruger is the only rifle maker that has chambered for the .25's in a very long time.

22-250  brass is  not cheap or readily available lately!

still easier to find than 250-3000 though

wikipedia says:  the Parent case 30-06 Springfield

Handloaders Manual of Cartridge Conversion says:
MAKE FROM:  .270 Win.  Anneal case.  Set shoulder back with .308 die.
Run into .250 Savage F/L Die with expander removed.  Trim to length.
I>D. neck ream if required (and, it normally is).  Chamfer F/L size.

from Handloaders Manual of Cartridge Conversion page 156

I can send you the page if you like.

I found out the hard way a couple of weeks ago I let a guy have 100 new winchester cases for thirty bucks.!

I had no clue A common cartridge case like that would be hard to get.

Necking .22-250 up to 250 Savage is real easy. Use a 250 Savage full length resizing die that has a tapered expander plug and resize as of it was already a 250 Savage case. Just used good resizing lube. Only caveat is the resulting case will be about. 010 to .015 shorter.

I am told that the 6.5 Creedmoor case is nothing more than a 250 Savage IMp case.  It may be easier to neck down with those than to neck up with 22-250.  I would certainly anneal the neck/shoulder area first.

My only 250 savage

I could've been a contender

The Creedmoor is the 30TC necked out to .264

So then is the 30 TC nothing more than a 300 Savage with the shoulder pushed back to make a longer neck ?

Bullshop,  you are correct about the 6.5C it is just what you said.  I made my first 100 cases by blowing out the necks of 22/250 brass and they still work great despite being a tad short.
