A few days ago I received my copy of the Fouling Shot,July/August issue,as usual lots of interesting articles.I found one from Giorgio De Galleani very interesting, apart from the cast bullet information,he made mention of his interest in long range shooting and the limited number of ranges for the matches in his country. It made me think how lucky I am here,I shoot FTR and Match Rifle,Match Rifle is shot at ranges of 1,000 yards,1,100 yards and 1,200 yards.I belong to two clubs, one is 500 metre and the other is 700 yards, they are about 40 minutes drive from home.there are two 1,000 yard ranges an hour away and two 1,200 yard ranges two hours and twenty minutes away.Once I was fortunate enough to shoot at the Whittington centre in New Mexico, what a magnificent facility,I also found the antelopes on the range quite interesting, over here we have kangaroos and wallabies on some ranges.Mike.

Here in the States, up to 200 yard ranges are pretty common, but the 600 to 1000+ yard sites are few and far between. I'm not even sure where the closest 1000 yard range is, might be Whittington Center in New Mexico, at least a couple of day's drive away.

In Australia most of our ranges were military classification ranges, under the control of the military, until sometime before the year 2,000.Almost every town and large village had a rifle range, all rifle clubs were under the umbrella of the defence forces,in fact you had to make an oath or a declaration,to uphold the defence act of the commonwealth of Australia. That has now gone and we are under state rule. Many clubs and ranges have gone, but we still have some hanging on.Most of the ranges went to 900 yards,a small few went to 1,000 yards, the ones we have that are longer than that, have been extended in the last 20 years.Naturally population growth and anti-gun hysteria have closed many ranges,it is hard to convince younger people to support their clubs and ranges now,as they may not be there in the future, when they would like to use them.Mike.
