Howdy I have been trying to build a 7.62x39 using a 30 cal barrel. Recently I purchased a .30 cal barrel at a gun show. It has grooves about 3times as wide as the lands and in a 5r configuration. I would like to know who made this barrel. It has AL .308 stamped on one end and is 1.250 dia. It's not stainless and hoping it's chrome moly. Any ideas. Thanks.

It sounds like a piece of replacement MG barrel, does it look like one? Post picture.

If it is truly a 5R, .308 groove dia, it is NOT a MG barrel blank. But its possible this blank was mfg for US Sniper rifles. Obermeyer rifled barrels originated and was the only mfg of barrels with this rifling form. His barrels, I consider THE BEST out there. I know my Boots barrels are tack drivers. Now, recently since Boots Obermeyers barrels are hard to come by=he is a one man operation. Krieger barrels is now cutting 5R barrels “with Boots' blessings" There are also a couple others that are copying Boots 5R.  One of them calls his “5C". Should be a good barrel, anyways. for your purpose.beltfed/arnie

One of those making the 5c configuration is Broughton (Wisc.?). Supposedly some kind of advantage not having any grooves opposed to each other. One of our local CBA match shooters has a Broughton 5c (30 BR) and really likes it. His groups are impressive, too!

There are two things about the 5R/5C barrels. One, as just mentioned is the odd number grooves/lands,perhaps an advantageThe other thing is that the sides of the lands are at an angle, significantly less than 90 degrees, for less bullet distortion. and less fouling next to the landsbeltfed/arnie
