I know there are far better cartridges for cast than the 300 savage but do any of you still use one, what bullets and loads, thank you. Frank C.

I haven't loaded for a .300 Savage in a long time, but did use the RCBS 30-180 FN (app. Lyman #2 mix) with 29 grains AA2230 powder (muzzle vel. about 1,900 fps. While not in my old notes, I probably sized bullets at .310".

Cartridge OAL was 2.56". This bullet was seated with base well below the case neck. That caused no problems and accuracy was good.

I also used the NEI 311.155GC (the original Ed Harris design for the 7.62x39), about 157 grains in Lyman #2 mix and 27 grains AA2230, muzzle vel. about 1,950 fps and accurate. I've heard Lee makes a copy of this bullet, but I've had no experience with that version.

Consider both loads maximum.

While I had good luck with many .30 caliber loads using AA2230 powder, if I was loading for the .300 Savage today, I would experiment with AA5744, Reloder 7, one of the 4198s, and the discontinued SR4759 if any can be found.

that reminds me ... i rescued a rem 722 in 300 savage a few years ago y never have shot it ... if any interest pm me and i will dig it out ... the 300 sav. is kinda the old school 308 win. i don't think the 722/300 sav. is exactly rare but i hate to rebarrel it y destroy the glow ...

The 300 sav. is nothing but a short necked 308. I make all my cases from 308, basically just a neck trim. I do wish at the time Savage made their mod. 99 action longer, it would have been worth the retooling and history would have been kinder. Frank C.

I handload for two 300 Savages, a Savage 99 takedown model, and a Remington model 81. I use a load I found in Ken Waters Pet loads, Lyman 311291 cast from straight linotype, sized .309 + 18.0 grains Imr4227. Oal 2.58".  I was getting about 3” groups from the Savage 99 at 100 yards with iron sights. Since then I have scoped the gun, but haven't tried cast loads again.

Have two, a 99 and a Rem 760. Will shoot the RCBS 308-165-SIL for paper and the Ideal 311291 and/or Lee 309-170 for deer. But not there yet...

My 1928 vintage 99G doesn't like longer cast bullets as the twist is slower than the supposed 1-12".
