I am sorry that we have apparently now a new and virulent brand of spam. I have spent about an hour in each of the last two morning deleting the batch I thought was coming overnight as most of the small amount of the spam that we have gotten earlier did. I now see that more seems to be appearing all the time. I emailed Mike for help yesterday but have gotten no answer. He must be out of email's reach. I will try to keep an eye on the forum and delete it quicker. I hope the other moderates will pitch in and help delete this stuff as it comes in. Thanks for your patience. John

John, I guess it is a sign of the times. It pays to be ever vigilant. Got a call recently from a man with heavy Indian accent who said he was an IRS agent telling me that I was going to be arrested for over due taxes and and if I hung up the police would be dispatched. Believe it or not, there are some local folks that have fallen victim to the scam and have lost a lot of money. They have the ability to manipulate caller ID and that is a factor I'm sure that has caused some peoples downfall. The IRS has done their best to get the word out that we don't call people.Don

I sent a PM to Mike about a new “Member” that signed in two days ago. He used exactly the same greeting as another site I hang out at. Within two days they were like us getting a spam every minute from a computer out of the US.

SPAM? I love SPAM! Scrambled eggs, rice, and SPAM. Mmmgood. Like a trip to the South Pacific.

On another forum where I moderate we have a “One touch ban and clean” button. Click on that and the member and the IP address are banned and all his posts are removed from the forum.

Hopefully it will slow down or stop. Looking at the suspects I found that the email addresses were from yahoo.in and as I don't like yahoo, aol, att and bellsouth because they don't like us, I blocked anything from yahoo.in.

my ip lets me adjust my blocker for incoming ... i can select country addresses for rejection ...
as for the irs scheme, if they call me, being feeble minded and all, i am going to confess i forgot to file, but only have a cigar box of $100 s under my bed; they can send someone around to pick up my guilt money .

I've also gotten the call from the IRS. I have to say that outside of the accent and the fact that the IRS doesn't call they have a very good pitch and who was sure that the IRS never called until these calls started and the announcements were made. It is despicable that people prey on geezers knowing that they sometimes aren't able to take care of themselves. They deserve what they might get if they came after Ken's money.
Of course the worst of all are relatives sometimes the children. There's got to be a special level of hell for them.

I got a message like that left on my answering machine. . I called the sheriff, and was told to ignore it, it's a scam that's been going around the country for a couple of years. . Then last Friday, the paper had a headline article “IRS” Calls are massive scam". . The scammers have hit almost every state. “One unidentified victim lost more than $500,000." . "The scam is so widespread that investigators believe there is more than one group of perpetrators, including some overseas." . To repeat an old saying: “Technology will make out lives better” :(

SPAM? I am lucky to say I'm not sure what it is - at least not on narrow-interest sites like CBA. But I only know how to use iPad, and maybe it is automatically blocked by my internet connection? (Apple iCloud) Been under some pressure to get with the “big boys” and get a PC, so I've got a nice big lap-top sitting right here - and not a clue how to use it! “Dummies” book en-route, but they are of very limited use (assume that a dummy is anybody that has a BA in computer science but hasn't gone to grad school yet). But Geez! The way you guys talk about internet problems, maybe I need to just take it back for a refund while it is still sealed?

I think you are likely to find out now that you are a big boy. I have used Macs since they came out in 1983. Part of being a contrarian I suppose. (95% of engineers went for the conventional wisdom at the time. It isn't just a stereotype that most engineers are conventional.) I have had very little trouble with viruses, malware, and such that my friends complain about.
Hackere aim at the biggest market and that ain't Macs. Maybe Apple is just better at blocking. Preventing his customers from being hacked probably is one of Bill's biggest concerns.

John,
The original users of Mac's were artists, design engineers and school teachers up to about 2000. Mac had the best graphics by far, and school teachers got 25% off!

Partially as a result of spam, . partially because every time I get an update to Windows something quits working (since my last Windows update I have no sound and can not watch youTube videos), . partially because Windows updates my XP and Ver 7 versions of Windows Operating Systems for software I do not have (I'm running Office 2003 NOT Office 2007, but I keep getting Windows Operating System updates to fix Office 2007 problems) . partially because some versions of Windows are so neutered that they are almost worthless (ex: Windows 7 Starter, Windows advertisement to go with any other operating system). Yes, I've heard that all the features are there (taking up disk space and bogging down the system) if you drill down far enough and know how to unlock the features, but I don't know how to drill down that far and don't want to spend the time . and partially because Windows gets so blotted it won't run on some of my older machines . I'm making a SLOW conversion to the Ubuntu version of Linux. Problem is many peripherals like scanners and printers don't provide Linux versions of their drivers. . Also, I've been unable to find a FAX program to run on Linux. . But I'ill continue the “good fight".

Apologies if this crosses the line about political comment in CBA, but back in the early 1990's I was given a tour of a pretty impressive barrel maker in Raton, NM. Rifling apparatus busily making barrels for suppressed 300 Whispers, for a pile of M700 actions. (Captivating, even stirring, operation to watch), contracted by the IRS. Frankly, I think a phone call would be nicer? (Or were they for the agents in Nigeria & Ghana, etc.?) Whatever, some 20 years later, I doesn't seem to have worked very well - par for the course for Wash. D.C. efforts in general.:offtopic:
