Well all my casting components showed up late fryday and I was able to get out sunday and try my 1st 3 powders and start loads to try to get a feel for what my rifle likes, bullet is a lyman#2660673 150gr mold mics about .2665 with lyman #2 lead mix and quenched bullets, My 1st charge of 18.5gr alliant 2400 likes 1860 fps with a 11fps spread. 2nd charge was 30gr of acc 2495 it shot fair at 2170 ave with 30 fps spread. and my 3rd load was 39gr of acc 4350 at 2475 ave with a 200fps spread and poor accuracy, I think slower is better and the biggest of the alliant2400 groups was 1.070 at a hundred yards, still leaves a lot to tune with, I will do latter test next weekend of both 2400 and 2495 these were with a light jam into rifling. My goal of being able to hit 8” steel gongs at 565 yards is getting better.:cba:

is this a swede 38 or a 96 rifle ?

I haven't experimented with mine but my old Lyman #5 powder measure, which I leave set for a charge of 16g 2400, drops 16.5g of 4227, and that load shoots very well with the Lyman 160g bullet.

Under 2 MOA! Are you kidding, on what planet? On a good day mine shoots in the 3's and 4's, inches that is. I have been pondering picking a Ruger 77MKII in 6.5x55 gathering dust that I happened upon when I wasn't looking for one. Reminds me of meeting girls/women before I got married. I passed one up maybe 8-10 years ago and regretted it ever since, a swede that is, in a Ruger, not a Nordic blonde(she was shortly after college).
I can only wish and dream my '96 would shoot as well as swede6.5's. Might need to revisit CBs in my '96 with couple of changes before giving up completely.

I shoot savage actions for now, we shoot a lot of non santioned bench rest here, and its easy to switch barrels easily. 1moa in this sport wont get far in a 1000yd match with jacketed rounds. I know once we dial in the right load and get a calm day this will be awsome to hit steal at 600yds, I need to work on the mold and get another .0005 out of its diameter maybe a little more tin will do, next weekend i will spend more time with it.

You should try about 32 grs of 4350 in that thing with a P-Wad. I used to shoot a 6.5 PPC with 24 grs of 4350 and it shot pretty good but wouldn't shoot without the wad for some reason. I don't know if you're running an 8 twist or not but if so I think you'll find the best accuracy at about 1750 fps. If you're using a 9 you can probably add about 100 fps.
I like the arrow in the upper right corner telling you which way to point the gun. I've been at a few ranges where something like that would have come in handy. :D

right now its a mcgowen barrel 1/8” twist, thanks for the rifling advice. this is one of my take off barrels that didnt keep sub moa,and is possible a temperarry until I find what works best, I reworked my mould yesterday to get a .2675 to clean up nicer in the .266 sizer. I will try this coming sat to get sme load developement done,and I might try them in my encore as well.

Just found that my encore with the TC custom heavy bar likes shootin cast a lot more than my savage,my savage with 30” tube may have been to long? my groups were inconsitant.My encoe with a 26” long throated 6.5x55 with alliant 2400 at 18gr is keeping almost a no verticle group at 100yd and 1.400 of my poor wind reading these were moving at 1840fps. I only had 2 gruops of 4shots, I need to cast more bullets and will try a little hotter till it starts to spit some out then back it down again, next week I will get more updates

Went to the range today,I tried 18.9gr A2400 and agian 18gr and 18.5, today my hotter load was my best at 1.400” 5 shots at a 100yd. Well this is definetly a harder job than I planned on,my worst group was over 3” but I will try 19.2 gr next week, the tighter group today was sized from a lee collet die. and im seating bulls just deep enough so the G C dont protrude past the neck I had very light neck tention and the lands are just bearly touching the tips.

Get the velocity down to around 1700-1750 fps and try some 4350 like I mentioned before. No matter what powder you end up using I think you'll find the best accuracy under 1750 fps. Also try adding a p-wad if you have some.

Ok I will try what is a p-wad ? i'm still learning,I have almost a pound of a4350 left I prefer Hodg but good luck finding it around here.

Black and Blue, your'96 SHOULD shoot under 3"at 100yds, something is wrong. Mine will reliably average under 2” for 5 shots at 100 yds. I use CBE's 266132 mold, sized .267 which is really good if you have a tight bore. Otherwise, you need fatter bullets. I can't help you with a specific powder charge as I'm using WC845(21 to 23gr) which you probably can't get but I'd start with about 20gr of 3031 and try up and down from there. The fast twist suggests a reasonably hard alloy, I use wheel weights +2% tin. As a matter of interest, I ONCE shot 2 consecutive five shot groups at or about 5/8” with 12gr of H110, but have never been able to come anywhere near duplicating it. The 6.5 has been a challenge, don't give up easily. Grouch

I think part of challenge is that my Swede has very long throat, I have tried the Lee cruise missile as cast, and sized to .264 (the only 6.5 sizer that I had/have on hand). Tried 16 up to 22gr of 5744 running between 1460 and 1820fps. Lucky to hit the 8.5x11” target at a 100yds and key holes were common. Gave them a push as cast at .270dia. with H1000, oops, that sure didn't work, 2200fps, dang it! Only a couple on target at a 100.
Also tried the RCBS 26-140-FN and NEI 26-125-DD, both with 10 and 12grs of Unique. 12gr printed with each just under 4". 10gr gave one group with the RCSS at 1.7". Tried again later but it did repeat, 3” plus being the norm. vels were 1350ish.
All bullets were 8:1 WW/lino, LBT blue, R-P brass, Horn GCs, WLRs, of the bench, 3x9 Weaver. Seated to lands with the Lee, throat too long for the RCBS and NEI to reach the lands.
Haven't done anything else with it since. There are other children in the safe that behave much better. My expectations weren't that high to begin with this rifle. It's picky with J-bullets as well. That 77MkII still has me pondering if it still available.

I was able to get some time at the range today, the 4350 with the P,wad at 29g seemed to be the best ave of 4 groups of 5shots each was 1.951, and my hotter load of 31g was larger ave of 2.335 mostly verticle strings.
??? it seems to spit 1st shot high in 3 of 4 groups, I tryed waiting between each group exept for cold range times

I don't know what kind of lube you're using but try cutting it back 1 groove at a time without changing anything else until you end up just lubing between the check and the bottom band. Too much lube is a bad thing. Too much lube in cold weather is a worse thing. Discounting the ones that went high how were the groups?
