I see Lee makes a 230 grain 30 caliber mold.  Don't know if my Ruger #1 30-06 can stabilize something that long.  Would like to try it first before buying a mold.  I realize this is a longshot but I'm checking to see if anyone could sell me a small quantity of this bullet.

Edit:  Found this.  The idea doesn't look promising.

I think I still have some so I'll check later and let you know.

Thanks.  I've done some research and others haven't had much luck with it.  My Ruger has a 1:11 or 1:12 twist so that is probably a strike against it.  (The previous owner measured the twist and that's what he's got written down).

Still, I'd like to give it a try.  It shoots fine with 195 grain gas checked bullets.

Assuming that the OAL of the TL 309-230 is around 1.375 to 1.400, the 12” twist rate shouldn’t be the reason for it not to shoot accurately since It’s the length, not the bullet weight that’s important. And that Lee looks to be a long bullet but it should stabilize.

From what I can tell anything under 1.400” will stabilize, where 1.500 is questionable, and over 1.600 you loose stability.

Larry gave me this link years ago to get a feel for stability. Twist is easy enough to figure out with a tight patch and a tape measure, but you probably know that already.

I think it’s worth a try. Good luck, hope all works out for you. Bill C.

Sorry, no luck so far. It's been a number of years so I'll keep looking. My experience with it in a 1 in 10 twist wasn't very positive which is why they're stashed away.

Thanks anyway.

I don't have much hope that it would work.  It hasn't for anyone else who's tried it.

Told myself today I would stick with gas checks and lube for this rifle.

Besides.  I think powder coat makes the nose of the 311284 too fat for the bore.

Max if your Ruger wears a factory barrel I'm pretty sure it'd be a 10 twist for the 06. I played with long 30 cal bullets years ago. It took me 3 Dave Mos molds until I got one to shoot. I started with a 1.425  260 gr. mold and worked my way down. I think the final one was 235 grs. but I dont remember how long it was. I was shooting these long bullets in a 30ppc case out of my bench gun im a Shilen 10 twist with a 3/4 degree incl throat and taper die. I did set a 200 yard 5 shot group record with it but moved on to something else shortly afterwards. Here's a picture of the 260 grain bullet next to the 30ppc case I shot it in.

Thanks for the post and the pics.

Maybe there's hope.

Someone wrote on the manual,"1:11 or 1:12 twist".  I haven't measured it myself.

Ken if Max doesn't want the mold I'll take it. Something else to play with. Give it a couple of days for him to see your offer. I sent you a pm because people can't send me one for some reason but can answer ones I send.

this lee 230 with the back end cut off to that nice base band might make a good plain base ...

Thanks everyone for the help but I think I'll stay with gas checks and lube for now.

I will be interested to see how it works out for you.
