I appreciate Steve Hurst's article in the most recent Fouling Shot about his experience with a 3" barreled SP101. I also have a 3" SP101. It was the first handgun I ever bought. I picked it up used in a local gun shop about 15 years ago. I wanted something versatile, but not too big to carry easily. It fits the bill perfectly for me!

Over the years it has had much the same treatment as Steve's Ruger - I polished and smoothed the action, installed a Wolf spring kit, and added a Pachmayr grip, though I opted for one without finger grooves. The only real difference is that I changed out the factory front sight for a fiberoptic sight and I didn't bob the hammer.

My typical load is a Lee 358-158-RF that has been converted to a hollow point. It weighs in at 152 grains in 20:1 alloy. I load it in 357 brass with 5.5 grains of Universal. The estimated velocity is 950 to 1000fps. It has moderate recoil and is easy to control. These are the rounds in the speed strip in the photo.

For woods use I load an RCBS .38-158-SWC gas checked on a max load of H110. I estimate that one is going about 1250fps out of my 3" barrel. They just fit in the cylinder, with the meplat almost even with the front of the cylinder when crimped in the crimp groove. It is a handful and I generally only shoot one cylinder full on an outing to the range! These are the nickel plates cases in the photo. I use the nickel plated cases so they are easy to tell from other loads. Both load shoot very close to point of aim at 15 yards.

I use a Lobo Gunleather pancake holster most of the time. I also have an ugly but functional home made flap holster I use if I need more retention and protection.

Thanks for the great article Steve from another lover of the 3" SP101!

I read the article and agree that a 3" would be a good length for a carry pistol. Seems the older I get the shorter handguns make more sense. After all what is the main purpose of a handgun if you are not a handgun hunter. I have some 6" revolvers but the last few have been shorter. Closest I have to a 3" is a Ruger Service Six with a 2 3/4" barrel, left to me by my Father. He bought it new in '76 and had it on his night stand for 35 years. I turned into a round butt for him because he couldn't find a Speed Six.

Your homemade holster looks good, I have made full flap holsters for several of my revolvers.

I had the SP 101 at the range this week. I wanted to get some double action practice since I have carried it on outings recently. Some of my jeans pockets are a good fit others are too small. I need to consider this when I buy jeans!

This is my first 3 inch and it might not be my last. I shoot the SP101 a LOT better than my 2 inch S&W revolvers. The extra weight out front really helps in double action.

I like your flap holster I may have to make one for my Sp101.

I shoot mainly wadcutters in 38 special cases. The crud ring ahead of the special case can cause high pressure if you fire a 357 without cleaning.  I there is any resistance to loading 357s stop and clean! A regular 38 bore brush is ineffective, I use a 40 caliber brush on the cylinder charge holes.

This is the Simply Rugged holster with the SP101. The holster for the Ruger LCP is a good fit in the pocket. Modifying the Simply Rugged holster was easy.

Those are some deep pockets! I don't think any of my pants would have room for my SP101.

The crud ring you get from firing 38 specials is why I load my loads in 357 brass whenever possible. Wadcutters work well in 357 brass. They just need a touch more powder to perform the same in the larger case.

The Duluth Trading work pants have deep enough pockets to carry a standard sized 4" cop revolver in a Mika holster.
