"The Best of John Jobson" from Sports Afield.
In keeping with my reading this fall of old time gun writers, this was an interesting one. Especially since there is no biography about him on the internet, he wrote only one book, but 500 magazine articles. Born about 1918 in South Dakoda to an upper-middle class family. Father and son hunted and fish together while growing up on the east slopes of the Rockies. He was a P-38 mechanic during WW2.
Writing career started in advertising for a movie studio in Hollywood. He started selling articles to Outdoor Life and Sports Afield in about 1950. He became Camping Editor for Sports Afield in about 1952 and Hunting Editor in 1961 until his death in 1979, His writing style is very smooth and easy to read.
He was not a rifleman, like Townsend Whelen, Elmer Keith and Jim Carmichael, but a hunter and shooter in preparation for hunting trips. I could find no interest is any type of competition. He only wrote a few articles on reloading and they were about bullets. He was a .270 Winchester fan and follower of Jack O'Conner. While he made many trips to the Yukon, Africa and North America, the were all guided trips with horse packers and wranglers. He was a noted outdoor cook and big booster of the iron Dutch oven.
His stories are very entertaining and fun reading, but don't expect anything technical or mechanical. His articles are the last look at hunting before the ATV took over the western US.
