I’m looking for some Speer brass (i.e. not nickel-plated) .38 Special cases.

I’d be pleased to hear from anyone who knows of a source.

Thanks

Steve

How many are you looking for?  I have about a gallon of range pickups, I’m sure some of them are Speer.

Even just a hundred would be good.

I've been trying Speer .38 Special brass reloads alongside Starline and Geco, and Speer definitely gives the best groups – I don’t know why. But maybe I just had an exceptional batch, so I'd like to check further.

Thanks

Is there a problem with nickle plated brass?

I don't know of any, but I've rarely used it.

I've found that it's harder to size. One example is  357 magnum you can notice the difference between sizing brass cases and nickle.  The other is, if you case lasts long enough, is eventually the nickle will wear off. An example of this for me is I have some nickle plated Federal 9mm Luger cases. ALL the nickle is worn off except for the head and extractor groove. That really shows the quality of that particular lot of Federal brass. Yes I have lost just a few of them.

It's been many years since I loaded nickle plated brass in .357 Magnum. But as I remember yes, the cases were a little harder to size and I would find that the nickle plated cases would split and/or crack rendering them useless whereas the brass cases would last far longer.

If someone else had of done to me what I did to myself . . . I'd have killed him. Humility is an asset. Heh - heh.

I was able to sort thru my range pickups this evening. I have 25 pcs. of Speer, all are nickel and the head stamp is +P.  Guess that’s not much help.

But thanks for checking anyway.

If you are doing accuracy testing in a handgun based on head stamp please keep good records and write an article for TFS. Conventional thought has been that case brand doesn't matter in handguns.

I’d wanted to check that it really didn’t make any difference, but slowly coming to the opposite conclusion. Only based on three headstamps, and the differences aren’t very big, but with enough shots are statistically significant. Hope to write up the results, eventually.
