Just to clarify…

Are there restrictions for the cartridge case used? Does it need to be from 1900 era? I’d like to use 256 Win Mag. Is the BR stock set allowed?

Hi Paul,

For the Quarter Bore match there are no restrictions on cartridge case or stock.  Go wild.

During board discussions the requirement for Quarter Bore may be clarified to require breech seating -- or not.

Did you intend to breech seat?

Hello John,

After working on a breech seater since January 2023, yes. The one from the Savage bolt action didn’t fit too well. If it shoots okay, I can shoot 3 matches without filling up the trunk of the car.

I assume that something in .22 caliber is not "quarter bore". It's a smaller bullet  but not "exactly" 0.250" . If you size the nominal .25" diameter bullets to a slightly larger or smaller than 0.250" diameter, is it still quarter bore?

I believe that the quarter bore refers to the bore of the rifle.   At least that is the rule in the ASSRA matches

The plain base shooters have always insisted on same as ASSRA --  25 caliber only.  I think they are afraid of competition from 22s

But we humor them and the proposed rule states 25 caliber only but our companion "Little Bore" match for fixed ammunition is anything not over 25 and won by a 22 this year.

Barry Darr shortly before his death was experimenting with a fast twist Hornet breech seating with success.

A post in assra some years ago had the info.

My thoughts:

  • Just to clarify - This is my experience.
  • Are there restrictions for the cartridge case used? - No
  • Does it need to be from 1900 era? - No.
  • I’d like to use 256 Win Mag. - Welcome aboard. it is a derivative of the.357 Magnum.
  • Is the BR stock set allowed? - That is what most of us are using.

I initially shot the .25-20 WCF because of recoil and the challenge. The articles in  the ASSRA Journal intrigued me. Also, I was diagnosed with a bone marrow cancer and was being very careful of recoil. The light recoil allowed me to continue shooting and competing.

Today I'm in remission, I've returned to the .32-20 CPA, and I still practice with the .25-20 barrel. I'm glad to see interest in the Quarter-Bore matches.

While everyone I shot with last year was breech-seating, to require breech-seating may discourage more competition. One bystander asked if he could shoot his Ruger #1 .25-'06 and I encouraged him to try it. Let's not add any unnecessary conditions.
