Recently I adopted a SSK 300W 10'' Barrel. It is a 1 in 8 twist. I have an RCBS 165 Sil and a Saeco 301. I'd like opinions on powder selection. I'd like to use 4198 in these. I'd also like to hold MV to around 1300fps using the Rcbs and 1100 to 1150 using the Saeco. Suggestions ?

2400 was a very good low velocity powder for me with the 300 BLK (same as whisper) and 4227 was the best for full power although it might not work well in a 10" barrel. Frankly I believe you will be better of with faster rather than slower powders. 4198 smoked cases for me even in a rifle. You might be surprised how easy Tite group would be to work with. Unique certainly will work well - it did for me. Good luck it is a great cast bullet cartridge.
There was a three article series on the 300 BLK in TFS a couple of years ago. They are a bit dated now as I did much of the testing before reloading manuals included the 300 BLK but there is still some good info.

Jim, Presently I have no 2400. I do have 4227 and have used it in 32-20 with the RCBS 165 and Saeco 311. I dont have experience with Tite Group. In the TC I wont be restricted to deep seating bullets as when loading for an AR. Thank you.

Richard, I played with the 30x221 and the 30-20 some years back when it was "the" thing. Shot them both side by side, 10" factory TC barrels, both 1-10 twist.
There is not enough difference in them to argue over. I pretty much played with every powder out there. I ended up with AA9 and still use it today. Have been told formula has changed.
As mentioned, I also think 4198 will be on the slow side. I would think maybe in the line of CFE BLK, it shows on MOST burn charts to be just a bit faster than 4198. Good luck. Jeff

I was not shooting an AR. All 3 of my rifles are bolt guns. 4198 will be too slow. The suggestion of AA#9 was a good one too.

Slow can be fun too.
Try Trail Boss.
It's a hoot to shoot.

Jim, I have some Accurate 9 but I wonder about its continued availability. RP

Thank you, but I'm not so sure TB will generate the 1050 MV I believe will be required for 200m effectiveness on Ram Silhouettes. RP

Any medium shotgun/pistol flake powder will do what you want in the bolt guns.

I'd agree, but the application is for a Contender handgun. Thanks. Richard

Another thought: Load data for the 30 Herrett, may be close enough to the 300 BO
