Open iron sight sporting rifle postal match?

Just wondering if there is a postal match for open iron sighted sporting rifles?....could also include peep sighted rifles also....no full bore target rifles...just something a deer hunter would have used.back in the day.

Yes, there are several different matches that fit that description. Most are scope or iron sights. Results may be filtered based on sights.

That sounds interesting. Some of the best open sights a have looked thru were older military rifle sights...can't remember the rifle make.

POSTAL MATCH? Just recently my range no longer allows paper targets, their targets are electronic and groups show on monitor. I liked this range because tables are very sturdy.

The different matches to shoot is almost endless. I shoot a lot of the postal matches. It takes me to the range a least twice a month.

I shoot Military matches. Iron sights. Scoped matches, offhand matches. I probably shoot 5 different rifles.

Please shoot some matches you will enjoy it!

That would solve the problem of seeing small caliber holes at long ranges.

The iron sight category of the lever / pump / auto match fits your description. I have shot it with a Winchester 94 and a Marlin 336. I shoot the scope class with a Remington 760. All classic deer guns.

If folks don't talk about postal matches, few want to shoot them. I loved postal matches and that is how I started 30 years ago. It was great fun.

The 'post' in postal is the issue for me at the bottom of the world. Expensive for you guys to send me targets, expensive for me to return them. That and NZ Post of arguably the worse guvmint agency on the planet to deal with.

I'm not a tech savvy guy, can't post pics right now but one way might be a text or net match.

Take a pic of your target with a ruler imposed over the two widest shots and send in. A phone or camera could do the deed.

Choose the conditions, open sights, 100 yard 10 shot group 20 minute time limit, for an example. Any paper target shooter supplied, just a ruler on top. Keep it simple. One class for open, one for peep sighted rifles. You can expand to other classes if it flies.

No awards, bragging rights only. You could set a standard to hopefully attain, say 4" for open sights and 2.5" for peeps. Get an attaboy for making or breaking the standard.

Not my idea, they do this on the m14BR forum with a small but loyal following, both rifle and pistol.

I joined the CBA in 1986, mainly to shoot the paper target silhouette matches. That event eventually was dropped but then I started shooting the single shot postal and I also started the 200-yard BPCR event. Both of those have separate iron sight and scoped sight categories.

6-years ago I started a postal program for our gun club members and their families. (10) events. One is a 100-yard iron sight hunting rifle match, (10) rounds from the bench for score.

If you like shooting offhand, the CBA has a 100-yard event with 2 distinct sight categories.

Postal events are a good way to introduce and recruit eventual match shooters.

The only thing stopping any member of the forum from hosting an informal match is YOU! If you think there should be one, host it. Keep it simple or complex. Simple is less work. Pictures of targets with group or score with known or printer friendly targets is the easiest. snail mailing targets is more complicated and costly. It was $6 and some change to mail the two targets in the squirrel shoot in a big manila envelope.

Not to hijack the thread. I have yet to shoot a postal match. When I started I jumped right into shoulder to shoulder matches. I do remember that my Dad was pretty active in postal matches in the early years. I just have not made the time. as mentioned earlier there are a number of postal matches where an open or iron sighted rifle fits.
