Every time I misspell "definitely" the spell check thinks it should be "defiantly."

My problem is that at my age my hands shake. So every time I touch the keyboard an "l" appears. And trying to proof read, my mind wonders off before I get to the end of the sentence.

Meplat or is it metplat?😁

RicinYakima posted this 13 October 2021

Meplat (from the French word "méplat" meaning "flat") is the technical term for the flat or open tip on the nose of a bullet. The shape of the meplat is important in determining how the bullet moves through the air. In particular the size and shape of the meplat has a significant effect on the ballistic coefficient of a bullet.[1][2] If the meplats on a group of bullets are uneven, the trajectory of the bullets will vary which will cause the bullets to strike the target at different vertical locations.[3] Bullets of the same mass that have similar-shaped meplats will travel through the air in nearly identical fashion, making it easier to group shots together or hit a target multiple times.

Well since it is my thread, I will be the judge of what's added to the list. I think most people spell it as it sounds, so I say nay to that one it doesn't make the list, but very good try.

Paul Pollard posted this 14 October 2021

Not a misspelling, but a common error. Didn't even notice it for several years. The "N" would be tricky when trying to make the mirror image. The older steel mold had the backwards N, the newer aluminum has been corrected.

Me too. I know both are correct spellings, but it taken years of discipline to get me spelling it, mold, which is the American way to spell it. If I am not mistaken, mould is the English (Great Britain and its colonies) way to spell it.

I still use mould for some reason. Maybe because I use gauge instead of gage. How about Minie? As in Minie ball or bullet.

I am not any kind of English teacher or expert, but this one sometimes sort of bugs me. Not really a misspelling, but the words then and than are mixed up and misused by many.

Then refers to time; past tense. Now and then.

Than is used as a comparison. This one is better than that one.

Old man rant over. wink

As someone who sometimes spells a word so badly that that I can find  it in the dictionary I shouldn't have standing to comment but what the heck.  I occasionally see: Fowling Shot (a shotgunner's magazine perhaps) or front or rear sites.
