Just purchased a Mowery percussion cap from Olney Tx. Anyone here have any pointers it a 58 cal patched ball rifle from what I understand. Have shot 50,45 and 32 cal. but never a 58.

Thanks Fitz

Shoot a .570 RB with a 10 thou patch. Easy Peasy.

With rifle in hand, I confidently go forth into the darkness.

Just a bigger ball and probably more powder! I shoot a .575 ball in my 58's, I wonder what twist it has?

I am not sure on twist yet ,as soon as it arrives I will check it out . Trying to research it The ones made in Texas some had a gain twist but can't find info on the 58's they were special order and you could get the twist you wanted.

Greetings,

I have shot a .58 CVA Big Bore Mountain Rifle for about 40 years, I use 35-40 grains 2F for punching paper out to 50 yards,  70 grains 2F for hunting.  I have 2 sizes of cast RBs, I will have to look up the diameters if you wish.  For patching I have used old t-shirts with thick cotton weave, CVA patch Grease,  My shoulder prefers 70 grains powder over heavier loads, it gives good accuracy, and will drive a round ball through a caribou at 54 yards.  Why add more powder?  I also use spit on a dry patch if I need a quick second shot, but have not needed to resort to that yet.  My patches are long strips of cloth greased and put in an old film container in a roll so I just pull some out, start the RB on the patch, and cut the patch after seating the RB just into the barrel.  With primitive iron sights I can shoot a 3 inch group at 50 yards regularly.  I also like to run a spit soaked patch after each round to keep the barrel lands and groves cleaner for the next shot.

Oh, if you are casting your own RB,s, after I get a bunch cast I put them in my tumbler for a day to smooth out the sprues.  Sometimes I add .45 RBs, haven't noticed alot of difference between the batches.

I shot .575’s over patches of greased dress pattern paper. One ball was good but two were better. I never shot anything with them but accuracy was good. I have a 45 Mowrey from Indiana with a 1/24” rifle twist. They are neat guns. You’ve got the good one.
