Is anyone shooting this bullet?  If so, do you lean towards a harder, or softer bullet?

I have been working with it for a couple of years in a C Sharps Arms 30/30 Model 1885. Last summer I was able to get only good groups when cast of 30/1 and finger seated in fired cases. I think there is potential there, but my rifle has iron sights, and it may just be my shooting. FWIW

Rus in BC shoots it in 40-1 alloy in his .30-30 with tremendous success.

I have shot one on and off for a dozen years. If the dimensions are correct with the base band reverse tapered to finger seat in the case it can do well. Some later molds Lyman omitted this detail and it is cylindrical. I shot it mainly in 4 groove Springfield Rifles in 30-06 and did well with it in a couple matches.Recency in a Browning Traditional Hunter 30-30 I size the base to .311 and breech seat with a simple push type breech seater. The mold is capable of minute of angle groups at times if  you work with it.Its a fussy design for sure.

I use 20-1 in my plainbase loads.

Mine is a Lyman marked 311403, double cavity and does have the tapered base band. I experimented with alloys and powders for six or seven years. A 1:1 mixture of old wheel weights and reclaimed radiation lead sheet worked as well or better than any of the purchased lead/tin mixes I tried. 4759 was the most useful powder in my various 1903 Springfields and Model 54 Winchester.

In the 1950's Lyman first cast bullet manual. There is an article by a guy named Tinsdale about shooting the 403.
