Long-time shooter but new to casting - in North Carolina

I've been shooting my entire life (I'm 62 now) beginning with a BB gun at a very early age.  I currently compete in IDPA and GSSF.  Because of that got in to reloading metallic cartridges three years ago (I started loading shotgun shells when I was 17).  I'm ready for something new, er, old, casting my own bullets.

I'll poke around here for start-up information.  When I got in to metallic I had an IDPA competitor friend tell me to acquire the best equipment you can afford and do it over time.  In the end you'll be happier.  I followed that advice and it has served me well.  I'd like to do the same with casting bullets.

If there are specific threads here that you can point me to and that can offer some perspective of what works, what doesn't, the pitfalls the success stories, etc, I'm all ears.

Hello: When i started casting i was lucky to be around people that had been at it for a long time. I learned a lot from them. Later on i picked up a copy of the Lyman cast bullet handbook. A lot of what i learned was in that book. I would recommend picking up a copy. It will get you headed in the right direction. If you come across any problems that are not addressed in that book you will find the solution here from one of the CBA members. Good luck with the new project. I think you will find it rewarding.

Welcome, you have come to the right place and will see that these guys know cast bullets. I see you are a shotgunner as well. Do you shoot the Southern SxS match in Sanford? Best of luck with your casting and shooting, Squid Boy

Thanks for the welcome!

I "shoot shotguns" but I can't consider myself a "shotgunner".  That would mean that I'm proficient...lol.  I like trap but not very good at skeet.  Nope, have not competed in shotgun.  Kinda don't want to go there.  IDPA alone has slimmed my wallet considerably.

Welcome to the forum from New Hampshire.

I too recommend the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook. I bought a copy in 1991 and I still refer to it regularly.

Thanks for the suggestion of Lyman's book!

I actually have the original 1958 1st edition version of the Lyman cast bullet book.  I got it in pair with an old 45th edition of Lyman's Reloading Handbook from Abe books months ago.  That 45th edition has loading info for a number of obscure calibers that have since been dropped from publication.  I'll order the new edition though.

Hello DrLogik

Your absolute best approach is to find a mentor close to you. Hands on supervised education can not be matched. Although not close, I offer my help. Many experienced casters must surely be in your area. It also tends to have a positive effect when acquiring supplies and equipment. Seek this option.

Shotgunning, another subject line. Sporting clays will be my foremost suggestion for challenge, variety, experience and pure fun. Again, distance rears its ugly head, there is a world class facility here in North East Florida. Saltwater shooting facility has a course that combines, trap, skeet, five stand, 3-D and fantasy into a magnificent experience. Impossible to become complacent as the course is adjusted every two weeks or less by an European champion. Be glad to shoot the course with you. Going to go slap a trigger today!

Shoot often, Shoot well
