How long is Ed's Red good for

I made up a batch of Ed's Red probably 15 or 20 years ago. It's been stored in a paint can in the garage. I opened it to refill my bottle and to say it was a little pungent would be an understatement . The stuff in the plastic bottle I carry with me smells alright but that stuff in the can nearly knocked me out. Is there an expiration date on the stuff?

I would pour a bit of the older stuff through a coffee filter and see if any slime or mold had grown in it. If still clear it is OK. Over time the acetone will evaporate, but the remaining ingredients still work well.

Oh! Oh! I can answer this one!

My shooting buddy Joe and I made a gallon about the same time. I stored mine in quart metal cans with seals and he stored his in gallon metal paint can. Mine is still good, except for the acetone in the vapor space that get lost opening and closing. Joe's, with the pound on lid, went bad because in the summer the liquid expanded, pushing out vapor (acetone mostly) and in the winter sucked in wet air and humidity. 

Now his has the same slime you get when you don't use your diesel additive in your tank.

Thank you both for replying. I think I'll just mix up a new batch and keep it a Mason jar with a rubber gasket in the house from now on. Even if it is still good the smell of what I have would run starving dogs, or me, off a meat truck.

I made a gallon in 1996 just before I got laid off, stored it in a plastic coated Nitric Acid bottle, still good no slime, use it when I remember I have it

I store mine in brown glass jugs with seals, surplus from the chemistry labs of the college I'm associated with. The liquid is as fresh as the day I mixed it. My biggest fear isn't spoilage, rather breakage. My philosophy is "don't do anything stupid" so after 20+ years all's well on that score.
