Good morning to all,

Has anyone tried to clean Sabot fouling out of black powder rifles with Ed's Red? If not, what is the best cleaner to dissolve the plastic sabots?

My copy of Ed's Red formula lists acetone as one of the four liquid ingredients, although my understanding is that the stuff that Brownells sells is lacking acetone.

The chemical properties of acetone make a Hazardous Material, and requires special shipping. Even though it is mixed with three other chemicals, its flammability is just as dangerous.

Both Acetone and Methyl-Ethyl ketone are dangerous liquids.

I'm not concerned with dangerous, hazardous chemicals or shipping. I just wanted to know if Ed's formula, which contains acetone, will dissolve the plastic, of which sabots are made. I mix my Ed's Red myself, and it does contain acetone. I have never used it to clean sabot plastic and just wondered it works.

I have used lacquer thinner in the past, but it evaporates so fast that you can't do much soaking.

Acetone evaporates even faster than paint thinner. Myself I think I would twist cotton gauze into the spaces of a bronze brush and dip it in acetone or finger nail polish remover and get after it.

Some paint stripper solutions contain methyl ethyl ketone. They are a gel and have waxes in them to help prevent evaporation of the solvents.

Yes, it will dissolve the plastic residue just like it dissolves shotgun wad residue.

It depends on what plastic the sabot in made of. All of my 45 cal sabots were made of HDPE that is high density polyethylene.

Ed's Red will not dissolve HDPE or ordinary low density polyethylene. However any sabot residue is in small particles or streaks, Ed's Red will loosen the deposits and they can easily be removed,

I've cleaned my shotguns (all modern ammo has plastic sabots) with Ed's Red for years, with complete satisfaction.
