Curious Old Holster

I bought a S&W Safety Hammerless (aka Lemon Squeezer) last year because I had always wanted a top break revolver. The one I purchased is blued with a 3" barrel in .38 S&W. The revolver is a beauty, and really fun to shoot, but also very different from modern revolvers I have handled. If you get a chance to shoot one of the oldies I would highly recommend it!

The revolver is fun, but my question today is about the holster it came in. It is a leather holster, rectangular in shape. It has a back panel that is thick leather, almost 1/4 inch, and a much thinner front piece that is molded to the revolver and stitched onto the heavy back panel. There are three large holes on the upper edge of the back panel, but nothing else that looks like it would connect to anything. There are no belt loops, and it doesn't seem like a pocket holster. Maybe part of an old shoulder rig? It also has a stamp on the front that says "221 38." I assume the 38 is referring to the cartridge.

Any thoughts on what this might be?

Machine stitched. Looks commercial. I’m curious to see if anyone knows.

Not positive, but Ric may know. Pre WW2 leather holsters similar to this were intended to fit into police uniform trouser or great coat pockets.

My first thought was left-handed pocket holster.

Working as a researcher at the regional museum, we have two of this style, and I bought a third copy at a yard sale. One is in very good condition and donated by the daughter of a 1910's Yakima Police officer.

The two holes on top were rivets that had thin leather tabs to fit over the suspender buttons on the waist band and help support the weight of the revolver. A thin pad on the outside prevented the hammer from rubbing onn the outside of the pants/coat pocket.

All three were made by "H.H.Heister, Maker, Denver Colo" and sold by "B.H.Dyas Co., Los Angles". Guessing all three were bought at the same time and issued to the police officers.

These were very popular when cops where this type of Uniform.

The number "903" seems to be the Heiser number for the 3 1/2 inch S&W 32 Hand Ejector.
