Im wondering why when I shoot a 100 gr cast, powder coated bullet from a short barrel (4.25) single action under the same (or slightly more to accommodate for the weight) wadcutter I get much a much dirtier firearm than when I shoot a cast, powder coated 150gr wadcutter from a longer barrel (5.5) single action.

I am using WST in both and the load is almost the same (3.0 vs 3.2 gr).

Both are seated with about 1/16 showing.

just trying to understand why.

Thanks

Maybe a larger cylinder gap on the 4.25 revolver?

Also it maybe that the extra time spent in the 5.5 "barrel allows enough time for all the powder to burn while there isn't enough time in the 4.25" barrel.

should I consider:

1) more crimp (very light at the moment)

2) slightly more powder for the smaller bullet

3) faster burning powder for the smaller bullet?

All three sound logical to me. 38 Special?

yes, 38 special

If both loads are 38 special then I think the cause is most likely the pressure is too low with the light bullet to get good powder burn. A heavier crimp or faster powder should help. More powder may help also, but it seems like maybe you are trying for a light load and more powder would defeat that purpose.

TiteGroup is a little faster. You might try seating the light bullet deeper in the case.

thank you- making the crimp tighter seemed to help a lot (as well as increasing the powder slightly). the wadcutter is seated nearly flush with the case as is (approx 1/16 shows)

You can seat the light bullet below flush. Seat it so the base of the light bullet is the same depth as the base of the standard wadcutter. With the same charge as the standard wadcutter the pressure will be less. This will get you better powder burn.
