California Lead Bullet Ban AB 3071

The California legislature has underway an addendum to the state penal code outlawing the use of lead bullets at all shooting ranges. You can google AB 3071 and read the proposal. In my opinion it is based on sweeping generalizations about lead's toxicity and the assertion that there are plenty of non-lead bullets out there. California has already banned the use of lead bullets for hunting in part of the state to save the California Condor, so it is not beyond the possibility that this new, misguided regulation might be enacted.

To me, it would mean the death of bullet casting, reloading and even shooting. I plan to write my government officials and the California Rifle and Pistol Association, NRA, and Shooting Sports Association. hoping they can marshal opposition to this bill in Sacramento. If you live in California, I urge you to do the same.

South Dakota is truly  a beautiful state. I had no idea until I spent a week in a little spot called Aspen. Friends and I stayed on a private ranch for the Sturgis rally. We road Spearfish canyon road, went to Mt. Rushmore and Deadwood. Like Richard said, hard winter conditions are our savior. Living in the central Idaho mountains with snow over five feet will send a lot of southern nature lovers headed back to warmer climates. Gp

That's why SD has cold snowy winters. It helps to keep the riff-raff out. Some at least.

Ric: I'd invite you to move just a little south east to one of the most gun friendly states in the union. By looking about S.W. Idaho you might think you were still in E. Wa. Travel 30mi. north of Boise and your into some of the most beautiful forested lands in the country. Better hurry if you decide it's worth while though the place is filling up fast with refugees out of LOCal.  Gp

The problem as I see it is that we get pushed out of a state and then get push again.  Thinking, well I'll just move over there where the people are nice, taxes aren't bad, and lots of freedom.  Pretty soon the barbarians, I'm sorry, I misspelled that.  I'm meant bureaucrats follow and try to turn a place into the mess they just left.

I left California in the early 70's.  About 15 years ago my wife and I started looking at Washington and Oregon to relocate to be close to kids and grand kids.  The closer we got to being serious about it the State Governments became so restrictive in freedoms that I hold dear, I crossed then off the list of places to live.  As close as I'm going to get is Idaho.  Although Boise is filling up with liberals from California, Portland and Seattle and starting to ruin that state.  I love Washington and Oregon, but the fascist won't allow a person to be at peace.  I think their competing with California to drive all free thinking people out or if they won't leave, place them under the thumb.

Sorry for the rant.  I'm retired and just sick of what I see happening to our great country.  Delete this if you need to.

Mashburn,

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply to your very kind offer.  Will have to say Thank You, but no Thank You. The Wife says; " I'm not doing it hanging out in the breeze ".

Women, Go figure  ?

Plus I'm a bit worried about the house blowing away, particularly in the middle of the night.

Thanks any way.

My best offer is you can move into my old shop and redo to suit your wife or you can move in my new shop and redo yourself. Both the old and new have gotten cluttered a way too much. Another offer if you like isolation, you can move back to the cabin. Good place to hunt and relax but not very up town. There is a propane refrigerator, not even a out house but there is a galvanized trash can that I built  a top for and mounted a commode seat on. You put a big garbage bag inside the can and fold the top of the bag around the top of the can, pour in some cat litter and do your job. When you decide the bag has been used enough you pull the bag out and dispose of it. I always just jump in my Yamaha side by side and run down away from the cabin and throw it out. The bears appreciate the hand out. It sets on the front porch but when I have company I always carry it around the cabin out of sight some where. I used to go back there every couple of weeks but I haven't been back there in about three years. Not since my son bought a ranch over towards Arkansas which is a hunter and fishermans  paradise. My Grandson and one of his buddies are going back for a few days next week to check on the turkey population. Oh yea, the road back there is pure H_ _ _. If you didn't need to use the garbage can before, you will when you get there.

Thanks,

Mashburn

David,

I mentioned your very generous offer to move in with you to My Wife. She thinks it's a GREAT IDEA. However She says we'll need a 20ft x 30ft bedroom and a 20ft x 20ft den. And of course a Full Bath and a walk-in closet.

And Satellite TV setup with all the Premium Channels.

And do You offer turn down SERVICE?

It hasn't changed much from when you were there, John. Now they whine about all the Californians that have moved there and want paved roads, sewer systems and fire department ambulances. Taxes have more than  doubled in 10 years! They still only pay $.25 for a cow and a calf eating public grass for 6 months.

" I have thought about moving to Montana since last fall when I spent a week on a fishing trip there with my sons - they don't whine there, the speed limit on 2-lane roads is 70 MPH,"

------------------

Sorry to hear about the oppressive speed limit they have passed. When I lived there they had no speed limit outside of towns. Also glad to hear they have stopped whining.  When I was there they whined all the time about the oppressive federal taxes all the while on welfare collecting 2.2 times the taxes they paid back in federal support, not to mention the practically free grazing on national forest land.  Of course that was when they had no dollar bills only silver dollars so it has been a while. It was beautiful country where I lived.

I made it sound like I was a Texas cop. Nope, I was the rowdy drunk Californian. Working the boom there. Just wanted to be clear. For a minor issue you’d get an option for a ride out to the bayou and get it over with or jail. Jail in Texas meant you could be a pea farmer earning your keep.

Yes, the Boston Leather "Texas" sap was popular when I was in LE. I think it was from Houston PD that it got its name. I preferred the shorter and lighter "Denver" model as it fit into the uniform blackjack pocket better.

Two things ; I know firsthand that The Houston PD doesn’t take crap off rowdy drunk Californians. I worked there in about ‘79. Back to the lead ban here, the bill was pulled from consideration for this year thanks to the CRPA.

Hello,

Your comment about lead poisoning made me think. I had heard so much about lead poisoning and since I have been melting and pouring lead since I was a kid and being an old man now, I just knew that I had to have lead poisoning. So, about  3 years ago I suggested to my doctor that I surely was a walking toxic lead dump and he should test me right away. Well, he did and guess what? I DID NOT HAVE ANY LEAD IN MY SYSTEM. AIN'T THAT A SURPRISE. This has turned into a very enjoyable thread.

Best of luck to all of you men,

Mashburn

If people are wanting to move to open empty spaces, how about waaay down south. We have every damn insect and snake that stings, bites or scratches and they are ALL dangerous, Then there are the giant mice, huge and mostly stupid enough to watch you shoot them.

that is of course unless they are on the move at 40 mph

and those ones with two heads are the worst

Thank all of you who have invited me to move to your state. This would be a solution to avoiding a California prohibition on using lead bullets at all shooting ranges. Unfortunately it is not an immediate answer. However, I have thought about moving to Montana since last fall when I spent a week on a fishing trip there with my sons - they don't whine there, the speed limit on 2-lane roads is 70 MPH, the rush hour in Bozeman was 5 pickup trucks, gasoline is $2.43 per gallon, and there is no sales tax. But, the -40 degree winters give me pause.

The Kalifornia proposal is based on the stated opinions of a local legislator who was probably put up to it by Sarah Brady fund, has no knowledge or experience with guns or shooting, doesn't care about law-abiding gun-owning citizens, and buys into the liberal elite, and has no scientific facts to back up his claims of injury to the public from shooting at ranges. Has anybody ever heard of injury, sickness, or death caused by shooting at rifle and pistol or trap and skeet ranges? Further, has anyone who reloads, or casts their own bullets, as I do, ever had a diagnosis of lead poisoning?

Imagine what it would be like if your state enacted a similar ban.

Very pretty, but we have turbo-goats also. Deep woods off repels ticks, chiggers and mosquitoes but not copperheads, ,cottonmouth water mocosins  pigmy rattlers, Diamond Back and Velvet tail rattlers. It all helps your hunting, makes you very alert.

You would like the Oklahoma Panhandle. I've been out there prairie dog shooting when they hadn't had any measurable rainfall in 19 months However, they have been having rainfall the last year or so.. I'll stick with my Mountains in Southeastern Oklahoma. We don't have any prairie dogs  but we have better game, plus we've got a lot of wild hogs. Hogs are a blessing to hunters who get bored during the closed season. You can hunt them every day by about any means you desire, and they are good to eat. We've had almost 5 inches of rain the last 4 days and it is supposed to rain tonight along with possible tornadoes. The good thing the rain is going to cause the fish to start running sooner. Turkey season opens soon but my onery Grandson and his buddy are trying to get a early start before everyone else locates the turkeys. They were back in the mountains this morning and ran into two characters carrying AR-15's. They were probably a couple of pot growers. The invaders tried to catch up with them but two 18 year old athletes are hard to catch.
