This is yet another illustration of what a good hollow point cast bullet can do in a .30-30.
Bullet was 175 gn #U321297HP sized to .312", 16 BHN, 10 gn hollow, tapering from about .110", to half the depth of the bullet. Muzzle velocity of this ammo was 2265 fps, so impact velocity should be about 1800 fps.
This is a big sow by our standards - 62" from snout to base of tail. She was shot at night as the mob approached a stock dam. Range was 110 meters, and the run after the shot was 35 meters. The hit was too far back for a knockdown, with no structural damage. The bullet went right through, with an exit wound about .30".
Night vision equipment is Oneleaf NV100 clipped on the back of the Leupold scope.
My criteria for a cast hollow point hunting bullet are that it be sufficiently damaging to kill a pig with a non-structural rib shot, while at the same time being able to penetrate an adult boar through the shoulder and into or through the off shoulder. Penetration is adjusted by varying bullet hardness and/or hollow dimensions. Velocity is full throttle consistent with hunting accuracy - in my case 2200 fps give or take, and five shot groups averaging 2.5 minutes.
My load specs have been determined by extensive field observation. This shot again confirms the recipe.
