5744 is a "known" reduced load powder, so I wouldn't see a problem with it. The Lyman 48th shows a starting load of 11 grains for a 55 gr. cast bullet, doing 1765 f.p.s. Lyman doesn't show any velocities lower than 1700 with even the fast pistol powders, although you can certainly go lower than that. Wheel weight bullets are certainly hard enough for that velocity. If you want a lower velocity try three grains of Red Dot or Bullseye.

For very light subsonic loads in the .223 a charge of 3 grains of Bullseye will exit the barrel reliably with 43-grain #224438. 4 grains is the minimum for reliable bore exit with M193, 55-grain FMJ. You can safely load up to 5 grains of Bullseye, 6 grains of 231 or 7 grains of Unique with 55-grain M193 FMJ bullets for 1800 fps.

5744 is a weird duck. It was produced in several "flavors" over the years in different countries. Early (20 years ago) versions seemed to be the SR4759 replacement. More recent ones don't seem as flexible. Whatever I have is not a good cast powder in 30 caliber. I tend to stick with Alliant BE, Unique, 2400, Red Dot/Promo and RL-7 for most of my Cast sub 1500 fps work. Lots of Highpower shooters like RL15 but I have no experience with it. As in Monty Python, the Holy Grail is hard to find.
