I have a young friend with a 45 colt revolver. He doesn't shoot it much because factory loads are expensive. I have dies and some brass I picked up somewhere, so I looked through my mold to see what I have that might work. I have an Ideal 452423 that looks promising, but only casts up to about 0.4525. Anyone loaded this bullet or other 0.452 bullet in 45 colt with any success?

I size all my bullets to .452 for my 45 Colts.

Hello all first post. I shoot various types in a Ruger BK & a Uberti and all shoot the best when sized .454, I've had leading problems when sized .452 . especially in the ruger.

Only have one 45 Colt, a Uberti. One of my standard loads is the 452423 sized .452" over 6 grains of Bullseye. If the cylinder throats are that big, just seat them unsized, as they drop from the mould at .454" with my WWs plus 2% tin.

My 452423 drops with a diameter of 0.4535 on the first band (above the crimp groove) and 0.4525 on the two grooves on either side of the lube groove. I may try it unsized so I have the larger diameter front band and will see how it goes.

If you were loading jacketed, you would be loading .451" bullets. I'm sure the bullets from your mold and the ammunition they produce when sized to .452" will be greatly appreciated by your friend regardless of the cylinder mouth measurement on his revolver.

I have a flattop Ruger with both the ACP and long Colt cylinders. I mostly shoot 452460 powder coated and sized .451. Great accuracy no matter which case I use.

45 Colt throats can vary in diameter.  I have a Ruger Bisley Blackhawk made in the 1990s and its OEM throats measured .448"- .449".  With groove diameter at .452" in its barrel, cast bullets created a lead mine in short order.

I honed the throats to .453" specs, and use .454"-sized castings in the gun.  That done, life--accuracy--and barrel cleanliness is great.

Slug or pin-gauge the cylinder throats to see what you are working with.  If they are in the .451"-.452" ballpark, your #452423 will do good things.  IME, the 38/357 revolvers have consistent, on-spec throats--so do 41 Magnums.  44 Spec/Mag and 45 Colt are a crap shoot, as are older 45 ACP and Auto-Rim revolvers, both Colt and S&W.  In the 44s and 45s, we sometimes find ourselves having to either complete their construction or having a mould made to fit.  Accurate Molds and NOE can fix you up at reasonable cost.

Owning .45 Colt revolvers of all three strength levels;

  • I shoot for the lowest level 6.5 grains Unique with a 200 grain H&G semi-wadcutter clone sized .452.
  • For the medium level practice, I shoot 8.0 grains Unique with either the SAECO 954 235 grain round-nose flat-point or the RCBS 45-230-RN sized .452.
  • For the Elmer Keith long range competition, I load 9.3 grains Unique with the SAECO 954 235 grain round-nose flat-point or the RCBS 45-230-RN sized .452.

The bullet alloy is scrap wheelweight alloy with 2% tin added. All the above bullets drop between .452 and .453, they just shine up a bit when dropped through the Star. I don't load any heavier since I don't like the added recoil.

I shoot the H&G #46 or 454423(both very similar) in a Ruger Bisley 45 Colt that also needed the  tiny .448 throats(.451'ish bore)  opened up to shoot at all.I also cut mine to about .453 and generally shoot 5g of Greendot.Its quite mild and accurate.I size bullets in a  .454 die,they cast about .453

I also shoot it in Ruger OA conversion cylinders(Kirst ACP and Howell Colt) and also in a  4"  Redhawk and a couple 45 Colt levers with the same load.

Thanks everyone who posted. I'll go ahead and use the 452423 and we'll see how it goes!

If you don't have pin gages to check his cylinder throats just lube bullets in .454 die without sizing and shoot them as-cast and unsized.
